I did latch hook rugs as a young person & wanted to share this craft with an 11 year old child who enjoys paint by number and other crafts.Of course I was a young child a while back, but not yesterday.The kit was nice.The kit does have a latch hook tool inside the package (I did not know this from the description & had purchased the hooks separately to ensure the gift could be used without further problems … like a gift without a battery & found it was unnecessary purchase).It is a plain net with a grid of black vertical lines & another color of horizontal lines.You must count the plain blocks, count same qty of color yarns & latch hook to the net.The edge of the net is rounded unlike the color map, so you must use brain power to understand the actual application.Additionally, examine the photo of the color grid & understand there is a correct place to start the pattern…BE CAREFUL!there is a learning curve - your pattern may be upside down before understanding what you’ve done.There is an under netting which is modern, for the use as a pillow for completion.I wish mine was like this when I was younger. They were flat net with an edge & I never made a canvas backing. They were rugs in my younger bedroom.I had mostly horse designs & used one for a science project. My science teacher was impressed with the hours spent on my project & also made a ceramic horse at a local shop. My teacher asked to have the latch hook rug as a gift. Since he was my favorite teacher, of course I gave it to him.

My main complaint is that there were multiple shades of gray, brown and white. There were no color labels on the bundles of yarn. It was pretty difficult to distinguish and took about an hour to figure out.
