POOR THINGS BD

This film is very weird I recommend you watch it at least twice, you will find you missed some of the background to the character the second time. It’s whimsical, magical, strange, unbelievable and can not be dated easily. This of course is because it is a total fantasy and while it has a lot of sexual scenes, it might be uncomfortable to watch, given the main characters. I would say I thought it was one to watch, it won awards at the Oscar’s and had quite a good cast. The character Emma stone played, was really well played and I found myself enjoying her performance.

Superb film, very entertaining, superb acting and a wonderful treatment for a bizarre plotline

I'm rarely lost for words, but this film defies catgeorisation, or even explanation. The art and production design is fabulous, it's like Antonio Gaudi created the look. The story is part Frankenstein and part Pinnochio. The actors playing the three central characters; Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo all turn in extraordinary performances. All-in-all this surreal fantasy is visually arresting and beautifully strange. I would have given 5 stars, but I think it would benefit from losing 20 minutes. Otherwise Excellent, well worth watching.

I was a bit sceptical about whether I'd like this film, having not been a fan of The Favourite but I absolutely loved Poor Things. It's mad and brilliant.... and it's hilarious. The visuals are clever and stunning, as is the music, which, in theory, should grate on me no end but actually perfectly fits the characters and the actions. The script is a work of genius - it makes its point without a sledgehammer and it's so funny. Last, but definitely not least, the acting is superb, particularly Emma Stone - I can't imagine anyone else doing better job with this than her. Bravo!

Strange film , really dodgy concept regards the girl if you think about what's going on ( you have to watch it to know but under age s*x comes to mind) good twist at the end , not one to lend to the vicar and his wife though the might blush a bit.

Coincidentally I read Alasdair Gray's novel 'Poor Things' some time before I was aware of a film being made of the same name. The novel is, like most of Gray's work, intricate, philosophical and quirky. The film's narrative does reflect the book in some ways but, alas, deviates quite considerably as well. I do not think the film is a patch on the book, which is far richer - not to mention the fact that we only see Archie McCandless' version of events (puzzlingly renamed Max) and not Bella's, the book's second part in which she refutes the fact that she's been operated on - a surprising and delightful twist. However, putting aside the comparison with the book, the film is superbly made: gorgeously designed, well-paced and with great actors. A fantasy world full of colour and outrageous imagery in which Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) roams to fill her new brain with knowledge and experience, starting off innocently and gaining strength and maturity along the way, unfazed by notions of propriety. Sexual desire is part of the journey and rather frankly dealt with, but without sleaziness - I do wonder at the furore the film has caused. Bella Baxter's journey is an interesting one. Her developing mind asks many questions. One of the strongest lines of thought is the notion that women are in many ways the victim of men, which is well put. Regarded on its own a splendidly made and entertaining film. But please do read the wonderful book as well.

I didn't think I'd like this film. It looked a bit too odd on the adverts. So I was pleasantly surprised. Emma Stone is glorious as Bella the woman with a baby's brain transplanted after her potential suicide. Mark Ruffalo is also very entertaining. In anyone else's hands this film could have been dreadful but Yiorgos Lanthimus's direction is quite magical and hallucinogenic. The script is clever with an obvious morality running through it. I really enjoyed it and am glad that Emma Stone got the Oscar for her performance. Some of her peers would not have done so well but she is brilliant. I don't think this film will be everyone's cup of tea though. It's strange but unique and different, and every so often we need something different to shake things up a bit.

One of the worst films I’ve ever seen

Ce film étrange et fascinant, m'a plus pour son inventivité et par le jeu des acteurs et en particulier d'Emma Stone, et pourtant je m'intéresse pas en général aux films d'horreur ou aux films fantastiques. La somptueuse création des décors et les impensables aventures qui se suivent, m'ont beaucoup amusé et je le conseille à tous ceux qui se passionnent pour l'étrange.

PROLOG: 0 Punkte (gibt es nicht), 1 Punkt, oder 5? Nach einigen Minuten wurde mir klar, das ist eine Geschichte, die mich umhauen wird. Da ist ein Film, dessen Thema zwar bekannt (bezwingen des Todes) ist, aber so neu erzählt, dass ich buchstäblich ohne Worte blieb. DIE GESCHICHTE: ein Haus in London. Spätes 19. Jahrhundert. Sehr interessante Einwohner. Der Eigentümer ist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), ein genialer Wissenschaftler, dessen Methoden jedoch sehr unorthodox sind. Da wohnt Bella (Emma Stone), ein junges Mädchen mit der Intelligenz (und Herz?) eines Kindes. Mrs. Prim (Vicki Pepperdine) ist sowohl als Haushälterin als auch als Assistentin tätig. Denn Dr. Baxter operiert, experimentiert und macht nur ungewöhnliche Sachen. Da wohnt seit einiger Zeit ein Medizinstudent (oder junger Arzt) Max McCandles (Ramy Youssef), er soll sich Notizen über Bella machen und ihre Fortschritte beobachten. Er erfährt, dass Bella vom Doktor "gerettet" wurde. Eine Tote, die mit Hilfe ihres eigenes Kindes lebendig wurde. Bellas Entwicklung schreitet schnell voran. Ihr Wortschatz wird größer, ihre Bewegungen weiblicher. Sie entdeckt die Lust, will sie ausleben. Da kommt ein schmieriger Anwalt Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo) zur rechten Zeit. Bella verschwindet mit Duncan, fährt nach Lissabon, später mit dem Schiff nach Alexandria. Zuerst ist Sex alles, was sie will. Doch durch Beobachtung erkennt sie neue Welten, stellt Fragen, liest phillosophische Bücher. Duncan will sie für sich behalten, erkennt nicht, dass es zu spät ist. Nach der Trennung verdient Bella ihr Geld als Prostituierte in Paris. Sie sieht den Beruf als Notwewndigkeit, wird dabei zu einer Frau, die Gefühle (er)kennt, die der Welt helfen will. Sie ist pragmatisch, dieser Wesenszug hilft ihr oft. Bella will jetzt ihre Vergangenheit erforschen. In London angekommen trifft sie ihren "God" (so nennt sie Godwin. Er ist ihr Erschaffer!) schwer krank. Er erzählt ihr jetzt, wie sie zum zweiten Mal geboren wurde. Er stimmt zu, dass Bella Medizin studieren sollte, und will ihr seine Praxis übergeben. Doch, bevor dies geschieht, geht Bella noch einmal zurück und wird dabei fast zerstört. DIE GEDANKEN: Bella, nein, Emma Stone (eine perfekte Darstellung!), ist zu Beginn eine Frau, die zwar alles hat, was ihr jedoch nicht hilft. Geistig vegetiert sie, ihr Leben ist/wirkt fast kurios. Auch als ihr Gehirn sich entwickelt, bleiben die Gefühle verborgen. Ihre Fragen sind immer konkret, ohne Filter. In der Zeit, in der sie lebt, siend solche Fragen schockierend, beleidigend. So kann KEINE Frau sprechen, für eine junge Dame ist ihr Benehmen furchtbar. Als sie zum ersten Mal Hunger und Elend sieht und miterlebt, will sie nur noch helfen. Koste, wass es wolle. Sie will WISSEN, sie will kämpfen. Eine Sufraggette ist geboren, die mit ihren Kolleginnen im Bordell zur Emantipation findet. Als sie sich äußerlich verkauft und "Schande" über damalige Genossinnen bringt, wird Bella zur wahren Kämpferin. Sie findet einen Weg zwischen ihrer Frauenrolle und Möglichkeiten, die sie wegen ihrer Stellung hat. Sie bleibt sich treu und geht ihren Weg... FAZIT: Ein Film, der manchmal als Märchen fungiert (eine unwirkliche Welt ist das, was wir sehen), meistens aber als eine Wegweisung, dass NICHTS unmöglich ist. Dass eine Frau durch Klugheit, Wissen und besonders durch LIEBE (fast) alles erreichen kann. Dass dabei wunderschöne Szenen dem Film Flair geben, ist nur gerecht. Bella - Emma Stone - diesmal (auch früher, natürlich) umwerfend. Süchtig kann man werden. Die Regie, alle Schauspieler*innen - große Klasse! Wie wir sehen, ist sie mit Giorgos Lanthimos und Willem Dafoe in "Kind of Kindness" in Cannes dabei. ES bahnt sich eine großartige Zusammenarbeit an. Emma Stone ist zur Zeit eine der besten Schauspielerinnen, obwohl ich Ranking-Listen nicht mag! Und: Nachdenklich ist die Geschichte auch...wer jedoch einen Sci-Fi Film erwartet, der sollte ihn nicht sehen.

Na het bekijken van deze film kun je het alleen maar eens zijn met de filmtitel. Mannen zijn inderdaad "poor things". Prima cinematografie en een glansrol voor Emma Stone.

Love the movie, it was an acadamy award winner but it would be even better if we could get it on Blu Ray and 4K
