The One Minute Manager Builds High Performing Teams

Good content, but the style was a bit grating...
If you are looking for a book you can read in an hour or so that will give some pointers on how a leader can help their team perform to its full potential – you could do worse than pick up this book. What did I learn?Because I do a lot of leadership and management training, there wasn’t really anything new in here for me. (That’s not to say that other people won’t find it really informative.)Blanchard’s ‘Orientation, Dissatisfaction, Integration and Production’ is essentially just a reworking of Bruce Tuckman’s 1960s model ‘Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing’ (and Blanchard’s version doesn’t rhyme!).The application of Blanchard’s own Situational Leadership theory to teams - using different descriptors (Structuring, Resolving, Collaborating and Validating instead of Directing, Coaching, Supporting and Delegating) - works well, and reminds managers that they need to be able to observe as well as participate in teams in order to know how to lead that team effectively.Would I recommend this book?Personally, I found the style of this book a bit annoying (sorry). However, I know telling the story through a series of imaginary conversations and meetings makes the theories ‘real’ and accessible, and for anyone who is looking for an easy to read, easy to understand exploration of some actually quite advanced leadership theory, I can see how this might be a great option for some people. The content is sound, and most leaders would benefit from this advice on how to lead teams effectively.

Great guidance for teams
The One Minute Manager is a very short yet effective book. In today’s busy world you don't get much time to manage your staff. I tend to agree that what the boss thinks you do and what you actually do can be different objectives. Building high performance teams can be tricky, just ask your modern football manager. The secret in my opinion is achieving a shared assessment structure which everyone is happy with. That said, successful employees are rarely told they could improve so it’s a tough call, but by using Ken Blanchard's methods you may succeed.

I bought this book when I began my managing job two years ago and it's been a life-saver. Spoiler alert: you need to manage different people differently and the same person differently in different situations. I've used advice from this book in my work countless times and still do sometimes with friends. Recommended — especially since you can read it in a couple of hours.

A good book to give to team leaders
I've recently run a leadership course for the team leaders in my company and gave each one this book as a gift. The feedback from my busy delegates has been very positive because of the concise nature of the book and also its easy-to-read format. Recommended.
