Tragi-Comic
A superb, deeply tragic work whose comic book format should not be allowed to distract from its importance. The bitterness and disillusionment of Sattouf's father and many Arabs of his generation is portrayed in poignant detail that's tragic, ironic, and sometimes ridiculous. It's a brutally, painfully honest work and a brilliant, difficult and challenging read that will leave a lasting impression if you know anything at all about the Arab world. It recalls Persepolis for its frankness and deadly insight, but it's a sadder and probably more relevant work.
