Quieter and less "violent" than the overhead styles
I needed to get a new unit since there seemed to be something wrong with the original Genie overhead screw type unit. It's been 17 years in service, so it lived a good, well-serviced life. Even with regular maintenance it finally gave it up. Wanted to clean up the look and decided that although the jackshaft unit was more expensive, I loved the idea that it could be hooked into the home wireless system, as well as having an auto close feature. It's a beefy unit and the emergency battery backup in case of a power loss is a nice added plus. Biggest plus in my opinion is the fact that it's MUCH quieter than the Genie screw drive, and it wasn't all that noisy. Sometimes the dog doesn't even realize when the door opens. With the old unit, anyone in the house could hear the door open. Instructions were simple enough to follow. Once familiarized with what goes where, installation was fairly easy and straightforward. It helps to be a bit mechanically inclined, but there's also plenty of Youtube videos you can watch to get the hang of how to install. I took my time and carefully installed and double checked my work as I went. Took me a day and a half, including removing the old system. Now the area above the garage door is neater and nothing hanging down in the center between the cars. The LED light is now taking the place of where the old unit was, and love the added adjustable features of this unit. Auto time to close, auto sensing LED light comes on hands free and with timed auto shutoff once you leave the area. With the iPhone or Android app, you can operate the unit with your phone, and I added a video camera as well to be able to see what's going on inside the garage any time I want. I can also check the open/close log to see when/if the door was open or closed while away. Oh, and another neat idea was the closing lock pin that automatically latches and opens when the door is operated, locking the travel to less than a foot once closed in case someone tries to manually pull the door open. A huge step up technologically from the old style. It's been almost 3 months since I installed it and we're pleased as punch. A bit pricey? Yes. Worth it? Oh, heck yes!

Love it. Wish I had bought one two years ago
This is the best garage opener ever. It's relatively easy to install, fast and quite (super quite kind of freaky) . It's a much easier install over a traditional garage opener. The hardest part is most garage's don't have an outlet where this opener goes. If your handy with electrical, you should have no problems installing this. For the 8500w they have improved the connector that goes on the shaft. Instead of a dual clamp system and a set screw, they beefed up the connector and just went with set screws. They also give you LED lights that are superbright. I found all the controls including the wireless setup very intuitive and they actual give you a way to disable the clock on the display, NICE !!! Highly recommend. The only downside it's doesn't work with my homelink on my 2006 Honda Accord but works fine with my 2017 Odyssey. Not a huge deal and I new that going in. Update Feb 11th 2019. The -20 degrees days cause me to have to reprogram the garage door because of excessive downforce. It’s suppose to auto adjust based on the temperature but my guess is my spring tension went out of the range since I installed it in the hot summer months. No big deal. I just had to let it relearn what downforce was required and it’s worked fine since then. The nice thing about having the app set up on my phone is I got an alert the garage door wasn’t close. Another minor issue I learned was the WiFi does not stay powered on when a power outage occurs and the batter backup takes over. My WiFi and cable modem are on a UPS so theoretically they should both work as long as the internet isn’t down. Again not a huge deal but just something to be aware of.

Nothing finer for a garage opener!
I was an early adopter to this type opener, and once I removed my old overhead opener and greasy track and installed a jackshaft opener I was a total convert. The garage doors quietly glide open and closed, GREAT!! I happily used my LiftMaster 3800's for over 8 years and while they work well, they lacked the modern features like WiFi connectivity, battery backup and LED lighting. I could have purchased upgrade kits to add these features but it was more cost effective to go ahead and upgrade to these model 8500W units with WiFi, LED Lighting, and Internal battery backup included. I Installed the units myself and swapping in the new units was a snap, technically the sensors were the same but the new auto deadbolt locks are now 12V vs the old ones which were 24V. These new units are even quieter, faster, and better in every way. The wall units are smaller and thinner, the displays can be programmed to show time and temp or not! Since I have two doors, the controllers are mounted side by side, I have one show time and the other show temp. They connected easily to my WiFi and the app on my iPhone and Apple Watch show the status of the doors and I can open and close the doors remotely from them. I like the notifications of door operation as well. The ceiling lights included are very modern, low profile, and very bright LED units. They connect wirelessly to the control units and operate flawlessly. My only complaint is that I prefer "warmer" LED colors, 2700-3000k is much nicer on the eyes and these are a much whiter white, probably more like 4000-5000k, a bit cold in my opinion. I have all LED lighting in my home and have learned what feels best. In fact many Homeowners Associations specify outdoor LED lighting to be 3000k or less so I'm not alone. I added compact remotes that I found here on Amazon (get the "Yellow Learn Button" types) as well as outside wireless keypads, they paired easily. Also the system paired to our Jeep's built-in remote as well. Some will say that jackshaft openers are more complex than standard overhead openers, I now have over 8 years experience and will say that if installed correctly they are magical, compact and clean, I never once had any mis-operation in any way. All in all these are just beautiful units, I could not be happier with them.

Work great and are verry quiet
Had the first one installed by a pro, not really sure he was so professional when I saw him use a BFH to try and get it to fit. I had a wall mount installed because I don't have the overhead that is needed for an overhead type opener. The next two I installed on larger doors in a building where I keep my tractor and truck that don't fit in a standard overhead door and everything went smooth. Even installed new plug to accommodate the opener. They all work as designed and I installed keypads and a number of push button openers for my different vehicles so I don't have to search for an opener. I have never had a door opener but now that I'm 75 I decided it was time to be lazy and push the button, besides my wife has developed an ambulatory issue, and no she didn't close the door before we got the closer, I did. I guess I never had a garage that I could park my vehicle in because it was all ways full of other stuff, but that's different now. The battery backup is great because we loose power more often than we should so at least I can still open and close the door if need be. The only issue that I have is with the MyQ app. It does everything but operate the doors. I called support and we went through everything we could think of and it still won't open or close the doors. They are on three different networks so that open and close from anywhere isn't true for me no matter where I'm at with my phone. I'm happy that it shows the door position and history I guess that will have to do for now until I figure out the issue with the MyQ app and my doors.

A breeze to install.
Overall this is a great opener. I had one issue with mine where the emergency release cable would not release. Then i realized it just takes allot of force to get it to re-engage. The install was a breeze. I replaced my older overhead opener with this one and it is so much quieter. And the range is way better too. Not to mention the app. You can now open the door with the MyQ app.

Awesome opener that gives you more storage space
We’ve had traditional garage door openers in the past and they all operate fine. This unit doesn’t take up space at the ceiling and affords you that space for storage if desired. This was easy to install and setup. We installed two of these units in our new house 15 months ago and they haven’t had any issues. Work flawlessly on app, with built in car openers, programmable key pad or included opener controls. We have the app programmed to close the doors every evening which has covered my rear a few times I have forgotten to close the doors. I love the addition of the lock / bolt assembly which adds security. Great product but a little more expensive, well worth it in my opinion!

Happy customer!
What a great product! Install went smooth and the door opener works flawlessly. Just follow step by step and you wont have any problems. The hardest part was removing all the old junk and running the new wiring. I am super impressed and will be buying 2 more units for the other doors! I find that nowadays everything you buy is junk, but you get what you pay for-this is a quality product! Good job liftmaster!

Infuriating product management decision on what should be a great product
----------------Never, ever again----------------------------------------- I've put-up with the horrible quality of this giant piece of excrement for far too long. Constant travel adjustments because of terrible product and code quality related to door travel and force sensing and zero ability to adjust the unit. Far too many times I've had to manually close the door because the opener would trip excessive force warnings and open the door after it's been closed. I've ripped the unit out today, on Easter, because the travel programming will not work properly. This unit is just a terrible product experience that has earned it's place in tarnishing the liftmaster brand. I'm sure the chamberlain group doesn't care, they were paid. I'd encourage you to run, not walk, away from any chamberlain group product purchase. Save yourself the headaches and hassle. ===========updated review after 3 weeks================== I have lowered the review to 1 star, because I cannot set it at zero stars. Now the unit gets tripped up by it's non-configurable force settings. The unit will run the door all the way to close, then reverse it back to full open with a 4-3 error code saying "excessive closing force detected". When this happens there is no way to close the door other than to manually disconnect the operator and close the door manually. This product is absolute garbage and has been a complete disappointment from the moment I plugged it in. I cannot recommend strongly enough that you avoid the 8500W! ===========original review================== This is my 4th chamberlain/liftmaster operator I've installed, including 2 ceiling mount and an older 3800 jackshaft wall mount unit. I love the 3800 wall mount so much that I knew these are the way to go. Sadly, product management at chamberlain group decided to ruin a great thing. The 8500W motor is great, works well, is very quiet. The physical installation was straight forward and quick. The controller wire was just barely long enough for my application which is a relatively short distance, chamberlain group obviously skimped here. The problem came post installation when programming the 8500W. The unit does not work with the homelink transmitter in my 2016 GMC Yukon. It's remarkably simple to program and works flawlessly on all my other openers. The note in the install manual says will not work with 2006 or older - that guidance is off by a full decade or more. So now I have a top-of-the-line residential garage door opener that is effectively useless because chamberlain/liftmaster failed to make their "security+ 2.0" backwards compatible. Chamberlain group apparently believes their idiotic "security+ 2.0" feature in a $650 garage door opener should take precedence over a $60,000 vehicle? I now learn I can "potentially" work around this problem with a homelink repeater kludge at an added expense. However, from their own instruction manual, if it works with the repeater they still recommend you keep their remote in the vehicle because in a power failure, the bridge isn't protected by the battery in the opener - which defeats the entire #%$^#^%%#$ point of having an operator with battery backup. Had I known this glaring limitation, I would have bought the older 3800 knowing I wouldn't have battery backup anyhow. My advice, don't buy this product until chamberlain group hires a competent product management team.

Huge upgrade from my 20 year old overhead unit
This thing is great, works like a dream and is a huge upgrade from my old overhead opener. Install was a breeze, besides having to run some new wires since my old opener was is a different location. If you are on the fence about replace your old garage door opener, let this review be the reason you decide to go for it! Practically silent, allows you to use your phone to open and close the door remotely, the “deadbolt” lock feature is quite nice. All in all, very happy with the purchase, as other reviews say, it is on the pricier side, but to me it’s been well worth the money with the added convenience and security.
