Braun is best. The best value electric razor.
This thing is amazing. Braun is best. To me, this is the best value (under $100) electric razor. The best bang for your buck. I like this thing even better than my previous Panasonic Arc5 (a $150 razor, so like half the cost). It cuts amazing. I can get a skin close no-stubble shave with no irritation (with no shaving cream or anything, so just "dry shaving"). I think it's a got a great "sporty" design, I would say. It doesn't look cheap to me. A good light weight, lighter than the Arc5. A little about my shaving history for context. (I'm a male.) I would say I have a "stronger" beard, but sensitive (to cuts) skin in the beard region. To get a no-stubble shave, I would have to cut against the grain. With any manual razor (eg fusion 5, DE - double edge, or straight razor) using shaving cream, I would get irritation. I discovered in switching to electric razors, I could get rid of that, now I could get a no stubble shave without irritation using the Arc5. So if that describes you, you should start considering the electric razor. I tried a very cheap electric razor and it cut horrible. The blade on the Arc5 was getting dull after 1-2 years (starting to get irritation), so I looked at replacement heads. $77. To me that was high, so I thought let me try another razor just to see. Enter Braun 5. I like it better than the Arc5. And the Braun replacement heads seem like great values ($30-40, $30 for series 5), and not many people consider cost of replacement heads up-front. So it seems like a great deal all around. This thing is great for shaving any part of your body even if you don't shave a whole beard, for example, shaving part of a beard, outlining the beard or bottom of beard, shaving ears, quick back of neck, shaving any part of body (even though I don't do much, I just tested a small part), shaving back. A good way to describe it is strong, yet gentle. Strong to cut hair easily, yet gentle on skin. In general, just never push down too hard. If you have any harder to shave areas, just pinch the area a little bit with your fingers and gently glide over. If you get any irritation, just push less there in the future. I would probably even recommend this for girls (women/females) to consider, eg shaving legs or whatever. Like I said, to me, seemingly the best value electric razor, of everything I've tested so far.

Really depends on your expectations and past shaving experiences. I like it.
Edited again on 12/27/23: I still feel exactly the same as I stated below. I am still using this exact product and am happy with it considering its price point. I have traveled with it and it takes a beating. The battery is still in decent condition and lasts for a few weeks before needing to be charged. I figure the blades will start to get dull again soon and the battery will start to decrease. Hasn’t yet, but I’m sure it will soon. I noticed the foil replacement is only about five bucks more than simply buying a new one. I’ll likely buy a new one in 3-6 months. I still get about two years of daily use out of these me spend way less on one of these every two years than I do buying razors and shaving cream weekly. Over one year later: Still working well. No complaints. The battery is maybe at 80% capacity now, but no real issues. Edit 4/9/22: Expect this thing to last maybe 1.5 to 2 years. The battery will no longer hold a decent charge and the foil will need to be replaced. I ended up getting a new one and don’t regret it. It’s still cheaper and more convenient than using razors. Comparing the new unit to the 1.5 year old model is night and day. The new unit cuts faster, more easily, better, and holds an amazing charge just like the old one used to. So let me start by pointing out the obvious after having used many electric razors over the years at various price points. This is not an expensive or top of the line electric razor. This razor simply can’t be compared to the Braun Series 9 and especially should never be compared to a sharp, new, razor blade made for shaving with shaving cream. Even if you spend $1000, an electric razor will never compete with a halfway decent razor and good old fashioned shaving cream. Secondly, it should be pointed out that different electric razors will interact with different types of skin, facial structures, and facial hair differently. One person will have a much different experience from the next and will have various opinions based on their expectations. These are facts regardless of the technology and price point. I mention this because some of the reviews have somewhat unrealistic expectations. In my personal experience, I wanted an affordable electric razor for occasional use that didn’t give me shave bumps or razor burn as I have skin issues like eczema. I realized that the shave wouldn’t be perfect from prior experience with these things, but that it would be convenient when in a rush in the morning. That is exactly what I got and I am happy with it. All that said, I do agree with some of the negatives mentioned. No travel bag, no plastic protective cover, and no stand at this price point. It is also true that it struggles getting those neck hairs. Basically, after shaving with it, I look like I shaved from a foot away, but I don’t feel like I got a good shave. It’s also true that this model lacks a connected trimmer like the previous generation. If you want to manscape, you will need to manually remove the foil head and put on the trimmer head. Kind of a pain, but I expected that and have a better Whal trimmer I much prefer anyway, so again, expectations managed. I’ve only had it a few weeks so I can’t speak to longevity. Fingers crossed. And yes, this is not the easiest to clean despite the new easy clean design. Still, it’s not a deal breaker for me. Just a few electric shaver specific tips I find helpful. One, foil shavers should not be used in a circle, but rather only up and down. Two, shave the sensitive parts of your face or neck first. The foil head heats up after (normal and typical) a while so the foil head will be cooler if you shave the sensitive areas first. This helps with bumps and rash. For me, that would be my neck and chin. Three, don’t rub the foil viciously against your skin. Most electric razors will give you razor burn if you push hard enough. Pushing harder doesn’t really result in a better shave in my opinion. Four, using a pre-shave lotion may help. I only use this razor dry as it is more convenient and faster, otherwise why own an electric razor. Finally, splash with some cold water after you finish. The cold water will help calm your skin down and may result in fewer bumps or razor rashes for those with sensitive skin. Hope this helps. I would rate this one 4.5 stars so far. We’ll see if it lasts. The reality of electric razors, especially at this price point, is that they will do an okay job that may be good enough for you. It won’t be perfect and it will never compete with a real razor. I think if most knew that going in, this would have slightly better ratings.

Does everything I need
The Braun Series 5 is the same as the Series 6 but with an easy-clean head instead of a tilting head. It's inexpensive, light weight, comfortable in your hand, relatively quiet and shaves as close as any electric. Seven shaves dropped the battery by a third, which is pretty good. It charges in about an hour, and like all wet-or-dry rechargeables, you can't shave while charging. For trimming, you take the shaving head off and snap the trimming head on. That's a lot of bother for trimming your sideburns, but quite handy if you have a beard. Note that the shaver has two modes, Locked and Unlocked. To switch modes, press the power button for 3 seconds. The shaver arrives in Locked mode, so hold the button down 3 seconds to unlock it and turn it on. After that, a quick tap on the power button will turn it on or off. When you're packing for a trip hold the button down for 3 seconds again and the shaver will go back into Locked mode and won't accidentally turn on. This is a very useful feature, but it baffled me for over an hour!

Do NOT mistake this for an upgrade to your old Series 5!
I purchased this - with some hesitation - as a replacement for my old Series 5 5030s, which is nine years old. New heads for the 5030s are now very expensive, so I reckoned I'd reached the point where I retired it. This review reflects my opinion and experience with Braun razors. I suggest that you supplement what you read here with the 4- and 5- star reviews from users who have a far higher opinion of the new Series 5 5118s than I do. Let me begin with the positive, which is this: The new 5118s does appear to shave pretty well. In fact, my experience here seems to be different from several other reviewers here. In my opinion, it shaves as well as my old 5030. So - having said that - why do I only give it 3 stars? The three stars reflect my perceived quality of the 5118, as follows: 1. It is significantly lighter than my old 5030s. This is not just an issue of feeling less "heft" when shaving. It implies that the motor is not as beefy in the 5118s, and probably won't last as long. The 5118s feels cheap by contrast. (Perhaps it *is* cheap: some of the prices for the more expensive Braun razors are eye-watering.) 2. There is nothing in the packaging to tell me which model I have bought. The series number (Series 5) is on the box, but the model number doesn't appear on the box, and the instructions don't have it either. So one box design serves for all the models of Series 5 razor. 3. More about the instructions. As just noted, these are "generic" - they are used for all Series 5 models. Bizarrely, sometimes the instructions reference a version number of the razor, but the number is not the model number. All the instructions are in "IKEAese" - that is, they consist of little pictures with no text. However, many of the pictures are incomprehensible, much more so than any IKEA instructions I have seen. In fact, there is more understandable information on the outside of the box about the use of the razor than in the instructions. 4. The heads on my old 5030s were locked with a mechanism that required pushing a catch to release - good and solid. The 5118s heads are removed by pulling them fairly hard, a poor substitute for the quality of the 5030s. PUtting them back on is a fiddle: there is no satisfying "click" as the whole head goes back in place. 5. No version of the new Series 5 has a built-in trimmer. Instead, you must remove the shaver heads and "click on" the trimmer - again, a poor substitute for the old design, requiring you to carry around an extra piece when you travel. 6. The 5118 has some sort of "easy wash" cleaning process, the nature of which I hope to determine after I've gazed a little longer at the IKEAese instructions. The 5030 was very simple: take off the heads and run everything under the faucet. So far I have not been able to interpret what the pictures of the cleaning process are supposed to be telling me. The story here appears to be one of the not-so-happy aspects of capitalism. Our "Braun" razors aren't really Braun: the company was bought out by Gillette in the 1980s and by Proctor & Gamble around 2008. So I am actually using a Proctor & Gamble electric razor. My old Braun 5030 was also a Proctor & Gamble product, and it was well built. Since then, however, Proctor & Gamble have decided that the Series 5, a sturdy machine, should be "updated" by reducing its quality and therefore its cost to create. But they let it carry the Series 5 name, thus causing consumers like me to think it's a better product than it actually is. The problem with this tactic is that you can only use it once. For me, the words "Braun" and "Series 5" now don't really stand for anything at all. I pass no judgment on P&G for doing this - that decision was made for what they feel are excellent reasons, I'm quite sure .... Conclusion: This razor shaves well. Whether it will last nine years like my old Braun, I'm not too sure. I'll update this review if I have any reason to change my opinion.

Died after two-and-a-half years
I bought this from Amazon about two-and-a-half years ago, and the shaver has died. As of this morning, it runs for a few seconds before shutting off, with the battery fully charged. Switch it on again, and it runs for less than a few seconds before shutting off. Each time I switch it on, it runs for less time than before, then shuts off. It does the same thing if I try to run it with the charger plugged into it. It delivered a decent shave when it worked, although I hated having to swap out the standard shave head and trimmer head. If you think it's reasonable for a battery-powered electric shaver to die after two-and-a-half years, then you might be satisfied with this model. It's unacceptable to me. I will not be buying another Braun electric shaver.
