Keep these two limitations in mind:1: Vertical space. A traditional block holds knives forwards at an angle. This block holds knives vertically. You must have a counter, where you want to store knives, that ISN'T UNDER A CABINET. The block is over 8 inches tall, meaning it can store 8 inch knives. Add the length of the knife handle, and you need at least 20 inches of vertical space. If the only open counterspace is a place where you wouldn't want a knife block, don't bother buying this product.2: Vertical space again. I would not try to store a knife longer than 8 inches in this block. If you have a knife with a 9 inch blade for some reason, look elsewhere.Bonus limitation for life hack enthusiasts: you can't store butter knives or other eating utensils (like forks and spoons) in this block. The handle of a butter knife is skinny enough to be pushed through the grating at the top.Now, if you don't have any absurdly long knives and you have a counter that isn't under a cabinet, this is the knife block for you! In my experience, all of these benefits are real and useful:1: capacity to counter space ratio: This block holds knives vertically, meaning it can store my entire 11 knife set in a 5 by 5 inch space. It also fits behind other appliances or prep areas without angled knife handles getting in my way.2: ease of use and safety: knives slide in and out of their spaces easily, but are also held firmly. It is difficult to knock the unit over because of a heavy metal plate in the bottom. I have never knocked the unit over in the 4 months (and counting) that I've owned this block, except to test that the knives wouldn't fall out.3: cleaning and sanitation: It feels mean to even compare this design to a wooden knife block. First, the lid of the canister is removable, so you can wash the entire thing. (hand wash only, sadly.) If you spill something on your knife block, you don't have to worry. Second, the knives hang in open air inside the can. You aren't dragging the knife blade against wood every time you pull it out or put it in. You are only scraping the knives against the lid, which again, is removable and hand-washable.4: aesthetic appeal: The only branding is the Delson brand name near the bottom, so if you want an unbranded knife block you can simply make that part face the wall. The plastic body and lid look and feel high quality. The metal scissors holder isn't the best looking, in my opinion, but it is both optional and functional. Do not worry about the opaque sides! It is easy to know which knife is which - I arranged mine from longest to shortest, and have a "clump" of steak knives behind that. You can sort your knives by brand, utility, or anything else. As long as you don't constantly change their locations, finding the correct knife becomes muscle memory.5: durability: I can't speak to the long-term durability of the product. I've had it for four months at the time of writing, and haven't had any issues with it. I'll update this review if something breaks.NOTICE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: Even though this design is better than a traditional knife block, it isn't life changing to the point where you should throw away what already works for you. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Lots of room *by R***S on June 2, 2020* This holds a lot of my large knives. they do go in tight, it's a tight fit but they're all in there and I can actually get some more in there. it's got good storage capacity, looks good on the cabinet, and just bear in mind if putting it under a cabinet, it is tall and if you have taller knives, it may not fit under a cabinet space but it seems sturdy and it's a good product for the price. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Practical.
