Geekworm X1001 M.2 KEY-M NVMe SSD Shield for Raspberry Pi 5

Picked this up to go with the Geekworm case for a Raspberry Pi 5 home assistant build, and it does exactly what it’s meant to. Fits cleanly, no alignment issues, and once installed it just worked – the Pi recognised the NVMe drive without any drama. Performance is solid, much faster and smoother than running everything off an SD card, and it feels like it really unlocks what the Pi 5 can do. Combined with the case and active cooler, it makes for a tidy, reliable little setup. If you want proper storage on a Pi 5, this board is a no-brainer.

Quite a neat little addition to the Pi and boasts potential 2-3x speed increase compared to a USB caddy for an NVMe. Only downside is it didn't work with the SSD I was using initially and it wasn't obvious what the issue was. After some Googling, I found a comment from a user referencing material (I couldn't find) that said the particular Phison (?) NVMe controller could sometimes not function correctly with the hat. After changing out to a new SSD, it just started working perfectly at 8GB/s.

Summary: it is relatively small and cheap and will fit a full lengh NVMe SSD 2280 (or shorter) at PCIe 3 (x1) speed. But there are better shields now, some with a 2nd slot for say a TPU/AI card or something else. The standard (active) cooler also does fit underneath it - and since the board is not full width - it should have some more air to work with - rather than other shields that cover the whole top making airflow a lot more difficult. There is also an AUX power connector if you find Pi's power to be insufficient for the SSD - although you probably should not be using power-hungry SSD in the 1st place for a Pi. Hopefully the OS you're using will enable SSD DIPM power management, not sure if DevSleep can engage. Worth checking.

Works well, easy to set up, running “Home Assistant” on a raspberry Pi, makes a huge difference. Good price, fast delivery.

Appreciate this unit is advertised with incompatibility issues with one controller in particular, but it failed to work with 4 separate M2 drives. It's now in the recycling bin, don't have time to return a £10 item. The manufacturers instructions are limited on which drives will work, and there's a list of those which won't. Steer clear is my advise unless you can find a drive combination that will definitely work.

Installato insieme a un ssd Lexar NM620 funziona perfettamente. Non occlude la ventola sottostante.

Funkar utmärkt för min Raspberry Pi 5. Installationen var smidig och skillnaden i prestanda är enorm jämfört med att köra från ett SD-kort. Allt från uppstart till att öppna program går betydligt snabbare nu med en NVMe-disk. Det här är verkligen en uppgradering som gör skillnad och låter dig få ut max av din Pi. Rekommenderas varmt till alla som vill ha en snabbare och mer responsiv Raspberry Pi 5!
