The Portrait of a Lady Paperback – 27 Jan. 2018

So often 19th century literature tells us about beautiful, smart women whose main purpose in life is finding love and the perfect husband. Isabel is different. She thinks there is more to life than getting married, she doesn't want to settle down before having explored what the world has to offer: "I don't see what harm there is in my wishing not to tie myself. I don't want to begin life by marrying. There are other things a woman can do." How refreshing and modern for her time! Isabel's cousin Ralph, who loves her without hope, is the only person who really understands and supports her. In fact, thanks to Ralph she becomes a rich heiress. Ralph wishes her to have the means to do everything she wants in life, to have choices, but unfortunately with wealth come deceitful false friends and fortune hunters...I admit there were moments in the book where I thought it heavy, especially the part where Osmond courts Isabel. I disliked him so much that I found it frustrating to see her fall into the trap. I am so glad I decided to continue until the end! The relationship between Isabel and Ralph is one of the most beautiful I have ever read about. At the end of the story you feel like you know these characters so well that it makes you think that all the words that you thought were superfluous and made the reading at times hard-going were exactly right and necessary for you to understand. The ending was at first disappointing, it was not what I had hoped for. At the same time it made me think and wonder for many days after reading the last page. This is one of the best books I've read recently and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Wonderful book that I have re-read several times. James is a real wordsmith and I find myself in awe of his ability to describe moods and feelings so capably. The story revolves around Miss Isabel Archer, a young American who finds herself in reduced circumstances and is 'taken up' by her wealthy Aunt who takes her to Europe and to her home in England. Here she meets her cousin Ralph and Lord Warburton who falls in love with her. The rest of the book relates what happens to Isabel after she rejects Lord Warburton's proposal of marriage, becomes a wealthy heiress and falls prey to a fortune hunter.

Loved the novel: funny and not predictable, even when you know gist of story already. HOWEVER. ....This kindle version was mixed up, with sections of the wrong chapter appearing twice ahead of where they should be in the book. Bit of a spoiler for the plot. Sort this out Amazon: You should not be selling texts that have not been checked for accuracy. There were also numerous typos in the later chapters. I think you should refund my 49p!

Beautifully written and elegant pose but feels very long and maybe this is from a female perspective but the romances don't ever quite feel developed enough that they make sense. I would read again though and imagine it was wonderful to read in installments as initially written (it might even be better to read it that way)

I'm enjoying this Henry James period piece very much. His characterisations are excellent.

A very interesting introduction by the author. I had only read James' short stories before but am really enjoying Portrait of a Lady, despite its inherent elitism. Great writing and observation.

This version was only the first half of the book.This wasn't made clear in the description, so was very misleading. I have to write twenty different words so this is filler!

"The Portrait of a Lady" ist interessant als Zeitdokument, aber psychologisch zwiespältig. Henry James hat ein auffälliges Interesse daran, seine Hauptdarstellerin dafür zu entschuldigen, dass sie einen unglücklichen Lebensweg einschlägt; mir kam es fast so vor, als wäre ihm etwas Vergleichbares geschehen oder als wäre ihm eine ähnliche Person nahe gestanden. Jedenfalls werden Isabell Archers Charakter und Lebensumstände sowie ihre Veränderungen in der ersten Buchhälfte ausgiebigst vorgestellt und erläutert, was das Buch teilweise langatmig macht.Erst im zweiten Teil erfahren wir dann, was diese lange Vorbereitung uns sagen wollte. Henry James hat keine "moderne Frau" ersonnen, keine Heldin, keine heimliche Prinzessin. Isabell ist so etwas wie ein schwarzes Schaf: auffälligerweise trägt sie auch schwarz, als sie im Buch zum ersten Mal auftritt (sie ist in Trauer wegen ihres Vaters). Isabell hält sich für eine Abenteurerin, sie will etwas Außergewöhnliches, sie will ihr eigenes Leben und nicht "nur" heiraten... und tut es dann doch. Ihr Cousin Ralph verhilft ihr zu einer großen Erbschaft in der Annahme, sie werde daraus etwas großartiges schaffen, aber entgegen allem, was sie von sich behauptet hat, tut Isabell bald darauf das konventionellste: sie bringt ihr Vermögen in eine Ehe ein. Eine verhängnisvolle Entscheidung, deren Ergebnis ganz klar zeigt, dass sie noch ein Kind ist, das von allen Seiten Bewunderung und Ermutigung erhalten hat und nun über ihre eigene Eitelkeit stolpert. Sie scheint die perfekte Frau, ihr Gatte der perfekte Mann - aber das sind sie natürlich nicht.Isabell wollte das wirkliche Leben wortwörtlich auf Teufel-komm-raus kennenlernen und heiratet einen Mann, den sie genau betrachtet nicht wirklich liebt, der nur ihrer Eitelkeit schmeichelt und ihrer Illusion, etwas Besonderes zu sein. Sie glaubt, er werde all ihre Erwartungen und Wünsche erfüllen; was sie erwartet, sind Qualen, Intrigen und Abgründe, die sie sich nie erträumt hätte.Zum Schluss wächst Isabell ein wenig und es bleibt zu hoffen, dass sie endlich die ersten Schritte gegangen ist auf dem Weg zu der außergewöhnlichen Frau, die sie immer sein wollte. Sie übernimmt Verantwortung für sich selbst, ihre eigenen Gefühle und für ihre Stieftochter; um diese zu schützen, kehrt sie sogar zu ihrem ungeliebten Gatten zurück - die wahrscheinlich einzige heldenhafte Tat ihres Lebens.Wie sich Isabells Leben danach entwickelt, ob sie ein Mensch wird und keine Möchtegern-Heldin, wäre möglicherweise interessanter als das ganze Buch. Es ist gut geschrieben, aber man fragt sich am Ende trotzdem, was einem das alles eigentlich sagen wollte. Aber es ist nun einmal kein Märchen, keine Komödie und keine moralische Geschichte - Henry James nennt es zu recht ein "Porträt", und es ist nicht mehr und nicht weniger.

The novel is a classic masterpiece, but the digital edition has several problems, most notably the fact that there are sudden cuts in some chapters, which then 'jump' to other points in the novel until a chapter ends. It looks like something went wrong in the assemblace of the digital book. For this and some minor spelling problems, I would not buy this edition again.

Ein Klassiker den ich mir fürs Studium gekauft habe. Ein wirklich tolles Buch das gut zu lesen ist und dessen Protagonistin sehr interessant ist.

Nice to be able to clothbound books in at least some titles. They also have nice ribbon bookmarks sewn in.

I have started reading it just a day ago and so far it is amazing!

masterpiece of henry james.......

La couverture est magnifique et le livre a été livré en parfait état, cependant le contenu du livre n'était pas l'original mot pour mot, même si dans un cadre hors scolaire cela ne genre absoluement pas

mais je suis fan de Henry James et ce livre a participé à sa renommée. Pour qui aime la littérature américaine et l'apprécie dans sa langue d'origine ce livre est à conseiller fortement. C'est un classique. Merci Amazon de permettre aux anglophones de pouvoir lire ces merveilleux romans dans leur texte et à prix très modique. Qui peut en dire autant?

Si l'histoire en elle-même est très intéressante et le style soigné, la narration m'a, quant à elle, été très pénible à suivre.Je n'ai pas été sensible aux personnages et à leurs grandes questions intérieures- ils sont restés de simples étrangers aux problèmes incompréhensibles au lieu de devenir des compagnons de lecture.Je crois que je reste hermétique à Henry James.Dommage.

Incroyable mais vrai, les pages sont dans le désordre, à partir de la page 100 plus rien ne se suit, on passe de la 500 à la 300...J'ai jamais vu ca ...

Page no. 144 to 546 are not there in the book. These pages are replaced by pages before 144. Many essential chapters are gone. Very disappointing. I did a 'return' order of the book and was told that I'd get my Rs. 219 back as a cheque but got nothing. Thank you.

"The Portrait of a Lady" ist mit Abstand einer der besten Romane von Henry James. Er beschreibt dieCharaktere innerhalb seines symbolischen frames und undbleibt seinem eigenen Schema treu. Die Protagonistin wird hintergangen und und bleibt sich ihrer Selbst treu. Ein Klassiker, den man immer wieder nur weiterempfehlen kann :).

This is truly a masterpiece of literature and was a pleasure to read and listen to as performed by Alicia Johnson. James was quite the loquacious writer and his command of the English language exceptional. As the story unfolded I was mesmerized by the descriptive way in which he brought out every nuance of his characters or minute details of the surroundings, be it the estate in England or Rome, Italy (the eternal city). The protagonist of the work is a young American, Isabel Archer, who being educated or accomplished wants so much more out of life than being someone's wife, she longs to see the world, experience new things and a visit from an Aunt who resides in England but spends most of her time abroad is persuaded to accompany her. Isabel impresses her rich Uncle and his son with her independent nature and more than amuses them with their discourses, they conspire to make it possible for her dreams to come true. Even good intentions can go awry as Isabel will eventually come to know. The novel is rife with deceptions, and Isabel will have to make choices. I highly recommend this work and hope others will not be daunted by the length nor think that the author verbose.
