I can read - worked for my son!
This was my son's favorite book in 1988, when he was nearly two. Grandma was watching as I read to him; he took the book out of my hand and said, "I can read! I can read this book." He'd figured out the trick to reading, as I had pointed out each word as I read. I wanted him to see the connection, but was astonished that he made that great leap on his own. He read the whole thing, accurately. For once my MIL had nothing to say! Oh yeah, I love this book and have purchased it for friends in hopes that they also will appreciate the gentle story with just enough repetition: "Small pig sat down, and sank down, into the deep soft mud."

A great Level 2
My Granddaughter is still battling with the harder Level 1 books, but she couldn't wait to try Small Pig as soon as she saw the cover. She struggled a little bit, but there is lots of white space, great drawings, and both the Pig and the Farmer's Wife have distinct personalities. Even the swamp creatures and the city folk behave believably. I think that is why this book is so successful. A 6 year old may be a beginning reader, but a discerning listener. Small Pig is a great read aloud book first and foremost. My only small complaint is that I find all present tense less interesting than past, although the kids did not complain.I would list Small Pig as Reading Level 1.8 or 2.0.

Endearing and eloquent.
Such an endearing story and illustrations. A pig must have mud! A lucky pig at that, a pet. Some stories, whatever their length, have eloquence. For me, this story does.

All time favorite
This was my all time favorite book. I took it out of the public library so often in the early 1970's that my mother begged the circulation desk not to let me check it out anymore. It became a family joke. My sister found an original hardbound copy at a yard sale many years ago and gave it to me. I was thrilled! I am glad to see its available again, I am buying a copy of the soft bound for a baby shower gift. I will never forget small pig's face when he is stuck in the mud..classic!

Brilliant writing for the age group
So much writing for teaching children to read is prosaic and tiresome. Arnold Lobel was brilliant. You cannot fault this, or his classic Frog and Toad series, for turning a child into a book addict. Big fat print, very funny stories. Used to find my ex-hubby with tears of laughter reading them to any of ours from three to six. (And if he was reading OWL AT HOME the older ones would stay around to listen.)
