Winner of the 2024 Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Graphic Novel! H.P. Lovecraft's most famous horror story, rendered in chilling detail by modern horror manga master, Gou Tanabe! The complete horror graphic novel in one volume, faithfully reproducing the original Japanese release, featuring a title page in silver ink, 8 pages in full color, and eerie metallic copper tones and spot color on the cover. What links together two bands of worshippers, one deep in the Arctic snows, one hidden in the bayous of Louisiana, is more than their shared practice of blood sacrifice. It is the inhuman phrase they both chant: Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn—“In his house at R’lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming.” Now these nightmares will disturb the sanity of Francis Thurston, a young man pursuing an investigation into the cult of Cthulhu that leads to the most forsaken spot in the vast Pacific…and to Earth’s supreme terror, the risen corpse-city of R’lyeh. First published in 1928, The Call of Cthulhu, rendered in chilling detail by modern horror manga master Gou Tanabe, is the most famous of all of H.P. Lovecraft’s stories, and was the namesake of the acclaimed role-playing game system set within the Cthulhu Mythos. “I love H.P. Lovecraft…It would be great to adapt him as a serialized manga, but I actually saw Gou Tanabe create a great adaption of H.P. Lovecraft's stories. Afterwards, I ended up not doing it because I thought I wouldn't be as good as Gou's version.” —Junji Ito ( Uzumaki, Black Paradox ) One of American Library Association’s 2025 Best Graphic Novels for Adults. Review: Beautiful artwork, awesome story, great value - I had not read any Lovecraft prior to this, but wanted to once I learned that he was the creator of Cthulhu. After reading other reviews and seeing that this version was true to the original text, it seemed like a perfect entry to Lovecraft. This book was just what I expected if not better. Not only is the artwork fantastic, but the ideas and writing are also incredible and interesting—much deeper than I expected! The book itself is small, but appropriately sized. The majority of the book is in black and white, but there are several vivid images with color throughout that are just gorgeous. I would highly recommend, and definitely feel this is worth the price. I also purchased the other paperback texts from this series, and they are all the same size—perfect for my bookshelf. The hardcover “At the Mountains of Madness” is slightly larger than the paperbacks. Review: Fun take on Lovecraft. - Very cool illustrated version, nice quality books!

If you've never read any Lovecraft this is a good place to start!
Very good adaptation of Lovecraft with intricate detailed illustration. I've read the original and liked this very much. I got the hound and other stories by the same author (Gou Tanabe) as well as shadow over innsmouth and they were both great. The temple from the hound and other stories is really great!

Worthy To Elder Ones/New.
This adaptation was quite good, kept close to the source material and its fascinating to see the journey depicted. Comparing this to the original, I was more thrilled by the original, the words gripped me in a trance, that in a fit of passion I wanted to know more. Good times, I recommend this to elder ones and new readers. The Size : "Shadows Over Insoumouth" By Gou Tanabe Overall Enjoyment : 7.5/10

A classic gets a cosmic adaptation
There is no other Manga / Graphic Novel that has even come close to the Tanabe adaptation. It's great is every way as is every other Lovecraft adaptation he has authored.
