Get off the fence and get this NOW!!!!
Ok, you may be in one of a few finite groups. Group A: I have the two volume Tanabe Mountains and want to know if it is worth the puchase. Group B: I love Tanabe's work and want to know if it's worth it. Group C: I'm a Lovecraftian and want to know if this is a good entry point for me for Lovecraft Manga. To all groups: GET THIS NOW!!!!!! This came in to me today and I've read and reread the original pocket size Mountains Manga. Everything is legitimately better. This is NOT a cash grab like some other "deluxe" managas. It is a beautiful homage to both Tanabe and HPL. NICEST things are: * It is WAY bigger than the original Mountains Manga. (For reference, the original were like the size of Chainsaw Man mangas or something similar, regular size in other words. THIS one is the size of the hardback Berserk mangas. It may be like an inch smaller than the Berserk hardbacks but not by much. It is sturdy.) * BOTH volumes of the Tanabe Mountains are here. No two volumes. * Bigger book = Bigger art. It does not look like they went cheap with this and just stretched a scan (which can distort the original and is ANNOYING). No, they took time in making sure there was no distortion and it shows best in the full page spreads. Simply beautiful. * This will probably go out of print FAST so I'd grab it immediately. Hopefully they planned for this and it doesn't happen but if you have even a small interest, get it NOW. I am an unabashed Lovecraftian and Tanabe-ian. This book has warmed my dark, dark heart. I have rarely been so impressed with a deluxe manga. Bravo Dark Horse! Bravo!

This larger Deluxe treatment is perfect for the detailed art of Tanabe
Gou Tanabe has masterfully retold several Lovecraft stories that have been collected in smaller paperback editions. But Tanabe’s detailed art needs to be seen in a larger format so this hardcover deluxe edition is the perfect solution. His complete adaptation of At the Mountain of Madness looks great larger. The deluxe edition has silver gilded pages and a silver ribbon bookmark which is a nice touch to this beautiful adaptation to H.P. Lovecraft’s longest story. Although I have Tanabe’s other adaptations in the smaller format, I’m hoping to see them all given this larger hardcover deluxe treatment. This hardcover comes wrapped in plastic and includes a color leaflet. I have read Lovecraft’s story before and have read this story adapted by other writers and artists too and I have to say this is one of the best at capturing Lovecraftian horror at it’s finest. I highly recommend this!

Pure cosmic horror — slow, intelligent, and deeply unsettling
At the Mountains of Madness is not fast horror. It’s atmospheric, scientific, and methodical — and that’s exactly what makes it powerful. Lovecraft builds dread step by step, layering discovery over isolation until the terror feels inevitable. The Antarctic setting adds to the intensity. The vast emptiness, the cold, and the sense of insignificance against something ancient and unknowable create a kind of horror that isn’t about monsters jumping out at you — it’s about realizing humanity is small and fragile in a universe that doesn’t care. What stands out most is the sense of forbidden knowledge. As the expedition uncovers the truth, the fear comes not from what is seen, but from what is understood. The deeper the characters investigate, the more disturbing the implications become. The prose can feel dense at times, but it serves the tone. It reads like a scientific report slowly turning into existential dread. By the end, you’re left with a lingering feeling of cosmic insignificance. A foundational work of cosmic horror and a must-read for anyone interested in psychological, atmospheric terror.

Astounding, a great edition of an incredible adaptation.
The book itself is beautiful, the silver lining on all the pages fits well with the black and white motif of the rest of the book. The art is amazing, Gou Tanabe has succeeded once again. I highly recommend reading the original if you're into cosmic horror as it is definitely one of the foundational texts of the genre. The translation is on point throughout with only one or two "Wait, what?" moments which could have honestly been a difference in the reading of the original text. A must have for the fan of cosmic horror, manga, or both.

I've always liked this book. Fun to see it so well illustrated. Definitely worth it. I have two complaints: the faces are not very well done and their expressions are quite wooden. Also the outlandish milieus are too bland and "mushy"

I have never read a Lovecraft story, nor do I have much under my belt in terms of manga. My area of expertise is rather classical Marvel comics etc. but this book was a welcome change of pace. The format of this edition is excellent. A little smaller than an Omnibus but still plenty large and filled to the brim with astounding artwork. I don’t care for the silver accents but can appreciate the aesthetics. The binding is excellent and there is almost no gutter loss. The paper is medium thickness and matte, feeling very adequate. Overall, these Deluxe Editions are worth their money and this story in particular is gripping and interesting with lots of wonderful art. Don’t expect an action filled manga ala Hellsing, though. But rather a short story masterfully told via artwork and speech bubbles.
