A very heavy duty poly resin plastic. Very beautiful horse.

I can see a hint of purple in the figure, is the purple really noticeable in person?

When I took it outside, yes, the undercoat looks purple - mostly on the chest, points of the shoulder and hips. Inside the horse looks like it has brown tones under the black, but the color is subtle - my horse looks black unless you look closely. If you do a search on Friesians, you'll see a lot of them have brown tones. The piece is very lovely, probably my favorite so far of the horses Deborah McDermott has sculpted for Collecta.
