Classic Sorkin
I discovered Sports Night by accident on one of the digital channels whilst waiting for another show to come on. I'd recently become hooked on "The West Wing" and suddenly realised the reason I liked SN so much was that it had the same amazing quality of writing - and, on closer inspection, several of the same actors.Set behind the scenes of a late night cable sports show, SN is a study of workplace relationships. It's a comedy (pity about the dreadful laugh track on the first few episodes), but like any of Sorkin's stuff, it can make you laugh, cry and learn something new within any episode. The cast and crew are amazing and if you watch carefully, you'll see Mr Sorkin reprise his trademark role of "Man in Bar" from both "A Few Good Men" and "The American President".It's a shame it's never been released in a R2 format, but if you've got a multi region DVD player, get it. It's definitely worth it. The Anniversary edition has additional commentaries by the cast and crew, but those are just the icing on the cake.

Preston Sturges and Frank Capra revisited
Prompted by the latest Aaron Sorkin offering now being shown on UK terrestrial TV - " Studio 60 Sunset Strip" - I bought the the complete set of "Sports Night" one of Sorkin's early ventures into tv drama series and haven't stopped laughing for three long nights whilst I watched the entire series 1 dvd.The sharp, pacey dialogue just crackles with wit, humour and poignancy, and would have the likes of Preston Sturges and Frank Capra turning in their graves I; rollicking with laughter. If you buy just one tv series dvd this year make it this one. Just why no British tv channel has snapped this up heaven only knows.Utterly sublime.

I've just started watching it
Fast, sharp, witty, self important, surprising, funny, adult, intelligent, unusual.Life in a sports channel studio never looked so... well, what on earth would it look like? I've absolutely no idea. Extraordinary location for this superlative "soap".Won't get aired in UK or released on region 2 coz it's now too old and it's got too many shots of the WTC so get yourself a multi region player.Aaron Sorkin is like David Mamet except a bit quicker... and funnier

A show that will always be missed, and never be forgotten
I 1st came across Sports night on ABC1 on my freeview box a few months ago when I was on study leave for my exams. I thought it was witty, intelligent, very random and quite deep. Casey and Dan the 2 anchors are cute no matter how old they are compared to me! I was curious as to why the episodes wern't in order, so I checked it out on the internet to find the episodes were 5,6 and 7 years old. As it was cancelled in the y2k, the show was amazing and never should have been cancelled, the acting and writing was brilliant, it had an effect on me like no other show. So when I found out there was a DVD I was very quick to order it, I dont mind about there being no special features because it doesn't need any. The only critisisms I have is that Rebecca never should've messed Dan around and never went back to her husband. And Dana shouldnt have made her dating plan that didn't work and got together with Casey for a bit! And I wish there were more episodes because I could never get enough of sports night!

Brilliant - deserved to have been shown in the UK - Sorkin original
This was superb and gives an insight into why Sorkin has become so good. Not so much about sport more about the interaction of individuals in a work arena. A triasl run for the exceptional West Wing. If you enjoyed that you will certainly enjoy this.

A must for Sorkin fans
You will of course gather that I am a latecomer to this particular gem given the timing of this review, but I had to share after watching the first season. Having devoured the West Wing and Studio 60 I figured I would have to wait sometime before getting some of the Sorkin magic. This show was recommended to me by a fellow West Wing fan, but I was a little skeptical given I'd never heard of this series. I can honestly say that after the first two episodes I was completely hooked. So the setting may feel a little familiar to Studio 60, however that does not detract in the slightest. The same snappy and intelligent dialogue is there along with trademark compelling characters. Each show is primarily based in a sports channel studio and revolve around a single broadcast with the relatively narrow plot lines being thrust along by constant looming broadcast deadlines. There are a smaller number of longer burning themes including of course cast relationships but episodes on the whole stand on their own. Usually, there is a crisis of sorts brewing which has to be resolved prior to or during the broadcast so it frequently feels like watching reality TV (without all the negative connotations). In summary, if you loved the West Wing then you should absolutely pick this up along with: Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip - The Complete Series [DVD ]

Interesting but flawed early show.
Aaron Sorkin's "Sports Night" has much to offer and is very well cast. Despite the tedious laugh track -and the audience's requirement to know a heck of a lot about American sports - the show is interesting and demonstrates elements of Sorkin's brilliance which were to flower in The West Wing etc. The fast witty dialogue and brave attitudes to a range of social issues are all there - however they are not as well integrated as in his latter work and come across as rather platitudinous at times. Each episode seems to make a moral point but with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. That said, it leaves British attempts, to do similar, standing in the dark. So with these caveats I certainly recommend the show.
