The gems are no doubt plastic or glass, but they are laid nicely in the piece and not sloppy like so many other costume jewelry pieces. The chain is solid and easy to clasp via a lobster claw style mechanism, I've worn it many times and the material and appearance remain unknown changed, not noticeable wear or discoloration. The length of the chain was a bit too long for my preference but with a needle-nose pliers I was able to easily change the size by removing nearly two inches worth of links. I am totally happy with this purchase and feel like there is true value for the money spent.
