Ended up using a liquid solution to mix and pour over the soil which worked a treat. No smell that I noticed but easy to use - simply not sure if it did or it simply helped protect the top layer of soil.

This stuff really does help you just take out a little bit of your to earth pour this in and wham bang doneI’m obsessed With those little gnats and fruit flies Absolutely drive me round the bend. But I’m on a mission since I put this on Top of my plants, it seems to be doing a good job. Every morning I watch and every night I can’t see any of the little things in plants. The thing is, they can’t dig down into the Earth to lay their eggs because this stuff is too hard and the best thing is that when you water your plants it goes darker so you know when your plants need watering. Just bought some from my friend, because she had hundreds of these little flies.
