Mine didn't leak at all while being totally submerged for a half-hour.The threading is nice and deep and the cap screws on smoothly and easily. I don't even think you could cross-thread it. I just tried and I couldn't make it happen.The outside surface is not smooth, but rough with concentric, circular marks from the machining process. I believe folks refer to metals with this texture as "grainy." It doesn't bother me at all. Inside, the walls are smooth and free of machining marks, but the floors are just slightly grainy. Nothing like the exterior, though.The aluminum is a soft variety, so it will get marked-up as it gets dropped and rubs against keys in your pocket, etc. This is exacerbated by the grainyness. Whatever. I collect vessels like this, and in general, prefer products that have thicker walls and a little more weight. The lack of mass in these make them feel a little cheap. Yes, I understand they are made of aluminum and aluminum is light, and that this may even be a selling point or positive attribute in some minds, but for me, it denotes that they weren't made to be durable, but to be low cost. I also wouldn't test the "smell proof" rating of these jars in any kind of real world scenario.
