I had been purchasing sponges and cutting them to fit over the factory fitting. The problem was that any time I needed to clean the sponge I needed to wrap a paper towel around the sponge so it wouldn't release everything it was holding back into the tank. The filter running with this new fitting for 10 minutes had the water looking cleaner than running with the sponge and the shrimp have been doing just fine. I will need to clean the filter more frequently without the extra filter, but that is an easier task to do than cleaning the sponge.
