Having all those resistors on a breadboard is asking for a short so there may have been one. I ended up getting the 3.5 inch version and used the level shifters listed below. This worked well. I was not sure if the 2.4 inch screen was OK or if I fried it with 5V. I tried it by swapping it directly out with the (working) 3.5 inch setup and it worked as well.
