What a journey!
This book covered so many different eras and historical events that I did not previously know much about, I found it educational and entertaining as the author added the Carmady family story intertwined with history. I found many times I couldn't put it down and kept thinking just one more chapter! I have a bit of a family tie that kept me intrigued as to how the characters lives would turn out even though I knew most of the story there were a lot of entertaining twists. There was great story telling to add to what I already knew! I hope that anyone reading it will find the lives of the Carmady family entertaining and intriguing. There was a great amount of research on the details and all well documented. A good read!

Well written historical insights of rebellion and music
The way this story is told from a families journey through history is very entertaining and effective at helping to explain real historical events. I felt more connected to the history of the conflicts because of how the stories are told through the emotions and actions of this family. I really enjoyed the accurate accounts of music history in New Orleans, Kansas City and San Francisco, very fun to read.

Excellent Read
“Rebellion” is a very well written book which exposes a side of American history not often documented in our history books. It covers a number of historically accurate rebellious movements, and connects them in an entertaining way through one fictional family's history. Music lovers will enjoy details from the 1920’s New Orleans Jazz scene to the 1960’s California psychedelic experiments. It’s also a story about the development of the United States, its westward expansion, and the forces that brought us to today’s political climate.

History that captivates and entertains
Rebellion is so well written that I couldn't put the book down. It takes the reader from the revolutionary war to present day through generations of a family that finds themselves inseparably linked to major historical events along the way. Extremely entertaining as well as informative with enlightening historical facts from each generation. I would love to see it as an Amazon Prime streaming series!

Dan Carley and I were coworkers for 25 years, so I already knew he was a great storyteller. I also knew that he thoroughly masters any topic that captures his interest.I didn't know American history was one of those interests. I also didn't know his political views, and admit to a raised eyebrow reading the back cover. It sounded like the work could be an "Aging White Boomer" rant. It isn't. Not at all.Rather, it is the thoughtful exploration of civil disobedience through the eyes of those doing the disobeying. He uses fictional characters, many drawn from his and his family member's real-life experiences, to put you in the middle of pivotal events. You get to meet the key people, know their motivations and, most interestingly, understand their personalities. You'll learn a lot of history without any long-winded lectures. Carley's narrative moves along easily, never assuming you know everything he knows, yet always assuming you're smart enough to understand what is being said.I told Dan that historical fiction was not really my "thing," so I would probably only read the sections on Pendergast (because of where I was born) and Haight-Ashbury (because of when I grew up.) But after reading those chapters, I couldn't put the book down -- circling back to read it cover to cover.I honestly think that reading this book made me a better American citizen. Chances are, so will you.Reviewed by Robert McAnany

Historical Fiction. Rebellion by Dan Carley
300 years of historical fiction. Generations of the Carmady family rebel against the status quo and power elite in this well researched novel. I'm a bit of a history buff, and yet read about events of which I was unaware. Those that know the author will recognize some fictionalized autobiography towards the end of the book. The give-a-way for those that don't know the author is hidden on page 716. Well written, but could stand another proofread before the next publishing.

a deep dive.
Epic saga with a surprising thread, "rebellion" traverses an incredible diversity of historical and cultural landscapes. How can one connect the misery of new immigrants, westward U.S. expansion and an acid fueled hell angels bash? Hint, something that enhanced your own life. The captivating stories that abound are meticulously detailed. No formulaic characters, Carley makes the reader decide the bigger moral questions about the protagonist(s). I found parallels to Howard Zinn's "A peoples history of the united states", one of my favorites...
