A Gift That Turned My Boyfriend Into a Coffee Snob
I bought this manual coffee grinder for my boyfriend’s birthday, and a few weeks in he’s still raving about it. I had seen it pop up in a couple of top 5 grinder lists online, and it felt like a solid choice without the crazy price tag. Turns out it was the perfect gift. He says his coffee tastes better than he ever thought possible, and now he’s basically the house barista. He knows exactly how many beans to add and how many clicks he needs for the perfect grind, whether he’s making a French press or a pour over. His friends have even complimented him on his coffee, so clearly the grinder is doing its job. The quality feels great. The burrs give him a super consistent grind, it’s surprisingly easy to crank, and it only takes about a minute to grind a full batch. The little cleaning brush has been handy too. The only thing I wish is that I had sprung for the version with the folding handle to make it easier for him to stash away or pack for a trip. I’d recommend this for any coffee enthusiast who loves dialing in their perfect grind size. Probably not for someone who wants to press a button and have their drip machine ready in the morning, but if you enjoy the ritual, this thing is a winner. Solid 5/5.

No microplastics involved
Everybody's talking about reducing microplastics in kitchen items but no one talks about the microplastics involved in coffee prep. I got rid of my old coffee grinder because of the plastic top. When heat is generated by the spinning blade, I assume it causes the plastic to shed. There are no plastic parts whatsoever in this grinder. Aesthetically, this is a very pleasing little appliance. It feels nice to the touch and looks sleek on the countertop (with the smallest footprint, which is a huge plus in a small kitchen). The grounds slide out easily. The main drawback is that it can only fit 2 large scoops of beans at a time. If you're making more than one cup of coffee, that would be a lot of reloading. I did my research, and the Timemore was a Wirecutter recommendation. You can fine-tune the coarseness of the grind depending on your brewing method. I found that it's easier to hold whole thing in your hands while grinding, rather than setting it on a surface. If you have the time, hand-grinding your beans makes for a nice coffee ritual and I really like this one.

Small, but well made
Small. Probably smaller than you think if this is your first manual coffee grinder. But it's very well made. Very precise.

Excellent upgrade from ceramic burrs.
This was my first foray into steel burr hand grinders. Given the expense compared to what I'd used before--being still more than twice the price of an electric steel burr grinder, I was trepidatious. The experience was fantastic. Coming from a ceramic burr the grind time was like lightning. The grinding feedback felt nicer, the whole unit felt better in my hands. I was pleased that the catch cup and hopper trick still worked, and I was very pleased with the method of tightening the burr down as the clicks allowed me to be more confident I was setting it to the same grind every time. It is easy to completely disassemble for cleaning, but make sure you get everything bone dry before putting it back together. The handle is comfortable, and it's easy to tell when you're done grinding because the feedback goes from slight rough, like you're sanding something, to smooth clean bearing. I even use it to regrind ground coffee, exposing fresh unoxidized surfaces for a better brew--it's the best way to handle flavored coffees. It's possible to get flavored whole beans, but the flavor imparted will be very shallow to nigh nonexistent because the unground beans simple lack the surface area to carry much of the flavor. But regrinding flavoured grounds gives a similar coffee profile to grinding from whole beans (not quite there, but definitely better than just using grounds) and retaining the strength of additinal flavor coating the grounds. You can have your rich bodied coffee and your macadamia maple nut crunch too--without the use of syrup shots. What I don't like: The amount of grounds it makes is pretty small. It's fine if you're making a cup at a time, but if you're trying to make a pot, it's going to take at least two rounds of grinding--unless you like weak coffee tinted water. Adjusting the size of grind is done from output end. It's the dirtiest way to do it. Yes, you can and should brush it out, but still, it's messy compared to other models where you can make the adjustment turning an outer ring. Additionally, while the selector nut is indexed, it's up to you to count clicks. If you don't know what your grind level is, the only way to be sure is to crank it down, then loosen it again, counting the clicks until you're where you want to be--assuming you know how many clicks it is to get to the level of grind you want.

Excellent
Excellent- adjustable, grinds smoothly without too much work, great results. Wish it held more, but I just fill and grind twice for my large cups of coffee. Price is high but so is quality. Highly recommended!

Good build quality
Feels really well built and heavy. Good size so it is not too big or small for gripping in one hand as you grind. It can grind about three tablespoons of coffee per batch. The grounds seem to be consistent, but I can't really measure it. I used mine with a pour-over system and grinding your coffee to the size you like makes it taste way better than the ones made with expensive gadgets from the stores.

In short, I love this grinder. It has replaced my 15-year-old Hario, and is shockingly better. The first few times I used it, I was worried about the amount of grounds I was losing due to static cling. The easy fix for this is to add a couple drops of water on top of the beans and then shake them up. A little trick for this: Add your beans to the base reservoir first, then add a few drops of water, cover with the palm of your hand, shake, then add beans to top of hopper, and dry out the base with a paper towel (so that the remaining water doesn't cause grounds to stick).
