Hammer Glamour: Classic Images From the Archive of Hammer Films

Not at all a book full of naughty pictures (well, some are) but a fantastic insight into the lives of cinema's most overlooked ladies. It's very well researched (fresh interviews were carried out with many of the actresses) and it's amazing to read how many of them went on to be actually quite well known for other things (fashion designers, models, Bond girls - quite a few Bond girls actually). The photos are fantastic too, the cover photo of the busty Madeline Smith is a perfect choice to capture the look of "Hammer Glamour" as a whole - I'll admit it was a deciding factor in my purchase too! To my surprise, my wife also enjoyed flicking through the pages and commenting on some of the lovely ladies and what they were wearing (or NOT wearing) and agreed it was great addition to my horror collection. A fine present for anyone you know who enjoys the world of Hammer horror. Highly recommended.

OK I'm exaggerating a little bit with the title of my review but there's some truth in it. To be honest, I bought this book guessing that I'll turn every single page of the book looking at the beautiful pictures, than put it on my shelf. Here's how it really went for me: I open the amazon package, Madeline Smith greets me with the lovely cover photo of hers, I lift the jacket to see what's inside and to my surprise, I see there's the photo of Yutte Stensgaard all over the front case cover (Barbara Shelley on the back case) very well printed. Then I begin to "look" at the first pages (Introduction) and guess what? I'm still reading... The book is very well written, the respect the Hammer Studios have for their actresses is clearly seen on the artwork design, there are a lot of interviews and informations on every actress figuring in the book. There are 50 leading actresses and in that regard, I can say the book is divided into 50 parts, at least 3 pages for every Hammer Queen. This book pays respect to all the glamourous ladies that helped Hammer grow into an internationally acclaimed film studio. To buy this book thinking there are a bunch of pictures of beautiful women in it is nothing but disrespect to the Hammer spirit. If you think the Hammer Studios brought the magic touch to the horror on screen, if the Hammer films are more than just guilty pleasures for you, then like any other Marcus Hearn book, this is a must-have. The Hammer Horror is undead.

Arrived quickly and securely. A highly informative and entertaining book. A great read

For fans of the Hammer movies, this book is a treat. It presents a collection of glossy photos as well as detailed information on each of the lovely ladies who starred in the films. These women provided a distinctive 'glamourous' feel to each movie - often in a slightly provocative, alluring manner (and occasionally in a more overtly sexualised fashion). Drawing of the Hammer achieves, dozens of both colour and black & white photos have been found and assembled. And each actress has, whenever possible, been interviewed - and provided with an opportunity to recollect what it was like taking part in these famous British films. This is a well-presented book, and it's obvious that a great deal of care and attention has gone into producing it. Typically it's the male protagonists - such as Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee - who get all the attention. This book rightly seeks to redress that situation. Now we can once again admire the 'glamour' that was an essential part of Hammer!

It's nothing new to say that much of the popularity of the Hammer films can be attributed to the Hammer Girls. This is doubly so for males of my generation - those who grew up in the 70's. If truth be told, those insatiably curious about the female form would need only tune in to the Friday night creature feature double bill shown on the BBC. There was a fair chance that you would see the mammarilly gifted Maddie Smith in various states of undress (pictured on the cover), or Polish bombshell Ingrid Pitt sinking her teeth into some unsuspecting virginal prep school girl. The book cover leaves little to the imagination, but putting the titillation appeal aside, this is a great book - and goes some way to filling in many of the blanks left in the absence of those beautiful faces. It's interesting, for some, appearing in a Hammer film was to be the peak of their career - whilst others went onto greater things. The audience attitude of these films has changed over time. What was seen as titillation has now changed to real affection and appreciation. It seems we are catching up with those actors involved in making them. As the book says, many felt that one hadn't 'made it' until one had played in a 'Hammer'. A must for Hammer fans...

fantastic book

Very nice book with beautiful pictures and full of original informations about Hammer and the actresses. The Hammer fans can't be disappointed. However, two things bothered me. First, I do not understand why the author speaks negatively about the movies or scenes where nudity is exploited. If he thinks so, he would not have done this book on the erotic aspects of the Hammer Films. I see a bit of hypocrisy here. Secondly, I was very surprised to find that Kirsten Betts, one of the most striking female icons of Hammer, is not even mentioned in this book. Everyone remembers the incredible scene in The Vampire Lovers where this beautiful female vampire tries to bite the Baron, and where the latter beheads her with a blade. This is one of the iconic images of the studio. On the other hand, Hy Hazell or Shirley Grey are entitled to an article. Who remembers these Hammer actresses ? And Pippa Steel, who played not least than two vampire Hammer films, and who does not appear anywhere in this book ... It's beyond comprehension.

alors c est vrai c est en anglais jle savais! mais dommage pas d edition FR a part ça et qu il manque peut etre barbara steele a moins qu elle ne fasse pas partie des hammer girls et que 4 5 actrices j aurais mis d autres photos plus parlantes un super libre tres belles photos bon format et textes plutôt sympas a lire qd meme un excellent bouquin bravo ! bcp + content que celui de caroline munro qui m a decu bien que complet. je le conseille a ts les fans de cinéma et aussi ceux en particulier de la hammer.

Ja, hier gibt es auch nackte Haut zu sehen, wie zum Beispiel von den Playboy-Zwillinge Model Madeleine Collinson und Mary Collinson (Draculas Hexenjagd - Twins of Evil) oder Veronica Vetri (auch bekannt unter Angela Dorian) zu "Als Dinosaurier die Erde beherrschten - When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth" oder Raquel Welch in sexy Pose (Eine Million Jahre vor unserer Zeit-One Million Years B.C.), sowie auch Caroline Munro (Dracula jagt Minimädchen - Dracula A.D. ’72) , in Farbe und Schwarzweiß. Fazit: Ein "Hammer-Buch" wie es im Buche steht, aus der Buchreihe von Marcus Hearn (The Hammer Vault: Treasures From the Archive of Hammer Films, The Art of Hammer: Posters From the Archive of Hammer Films und The Hammer Story: The Authorised History of Hammer Films)!

Great book, nice background stories on the actresses. Fantastic photography as well.
