Dexam Jam Straining Set, nylon, White

Takes the strain, but only just
Having got the jam, juice and preserve making bug, I thought it would be good to upgrade my homemade bag and stool approach to straining fruit with something more fitted to the purpose. This straining set stores flat so it doesn't take up much cupboard space and is very quick and easy to assemble. You need to ensure that each of the legs points in the right direction to fit over your bowl: this may mean that some of the legs aren't screwed that firmly into the ring. I also found that the bowl I use (a large mixing bowl) is slightly too large for the legs to fit over, so there is a tendency for one of them to ping off again when you're not looking. The bag looks miniscule the first time you see it, but it does expand to fit up to 2 kilos of fruit once this is added to the bag. The fruit does add some stability to the set up, but I'd keep everything well out of the way whilst it's in use as I'm sure even a light knock will send everything flying.I was pleased with the results of my overnight straining of apples to make cordial and the bag was very easy to clean afterwards. I've seen a couple of remarks on here re rust, so I made sure all metalwork was cleaned straight away (hand washed, I don't think it would stand up to a dishwasher) and thoroughly dried off. It's too early to say whether this strategy will work, but fingers crossed it will.It did the job for me, but I'll be keeping my eye out to see if there's something available that's a bit more stable whilst still at a reasonable price like this version is.

It's so easy to use
I have another make which I found. I used this item for crab apple jelly so it's out with old one and I used this one. It's much easier to use than the older one. I would recommend it. So easy to use and for the price marvellous.

Disappointed
At first I thought this was great, but after two uses the rim, and later the frame, rusted, staining the bag. The bag isn't really very big and i've had to strain my juice in two lots, which is annoying. When I did fill the bag on one occasion the weight pulled the bag from the ring, leading to an almighty mess! The bag tends to clog quickly too, with fine particles from the fruit, which I haven't had happen when I used muslin. Probably OK for very occasional use but not for a regular jam maker.

Just the job
I made my first jam, crab apple, and this device proved to be invaluable. Easy to use and clean, and sturdy.

Does the job it’s designed to do .
Slightly wobbly but did the job fine once I got the right size of bowl to collect strained juice . Easy to clean. Have used so many times since I bought it . Money well spent .

Rust after first use!
This straining set was just what I was looking for....in theory! It was a little smaller than I was expecting but the strainer just coped with the quantity of fruit mixture I used. The problem I experienced was the apple juice mixture I was to strain for jelly, contained vinegar and this probably caused the metal stand to rust within 24 hours of use. The muslin bag is also dis-coloured too. Have replaced it with a plastic version.
