The Atlas Comics Library No. 3: In the Days of the Rockets! (The Fantagraphics Atlas Comics Library)

Beautiful presentation of mediocre material
Like the other volumes in The Atlas Comics Library, this collection definitely rates five stars for the presentation - beautiful reproduction, oversized pages, nicely bound, and a very thorough introduction. This is a piece of comics history that to my knowledge has never been collected before, and the production values are wonderful. Some of the artwork by the likes of Joe Maneely and George Tusca is also very nice, and easy to appreciate with the clean reproduction and large page size. The stories are definitely Grade C-D material though. They are nowhere near the quality of the first volume of horror stories, and nowhere near as incredibly strange as the stories collected in the previous Venus volume. You can tell that Stan Lee did not have his heart in space opera, as evidenced by the short life of these comics on the news stands. With their good artists and decent printing, it’s a shame that Atlas did not go for something more along the lines of Captain Science. This is a beautiful collection of a piece of rare comics history though.

Great material
Great art but the stories are all out dated. Little knowledge about outer space when these stories were written.
