Q: What is the length of the gloves in the longest dimension (tip of middle finger to opening at wrist)?

On size large/xlarge, from the tip of finger to cuff is 11 inches

Q: Do these gloves run true to size?

I do not often buy gloves however the pair of large gloves I purchased fit well. I hope this helps.

Q: Would these be suitable for winter backpacking?

They are warm but not waterproof so would not recommend them for backpacking. We live in Minnesota and they are great when I take the dog for a walk in the winter and the temperature is -10 or more. I am usually not out for an extended period of time.
