Teaches much more than just place value!
This game is so rich with learning on many different levels. I play this my 4 (almost 5) year-old son. Not only is it a great way to introduce base ten blocks and exchanging ten units for a ten rod (place value), it also incorporates addition, subtraction, least (or fewest)/greatest, skip counting by tens and we are using an abacus for some of the more trickier addition/subtraction problems for a 4-year-old (13-9 for example), so he is learning how to use that as well. The least/greatest and skip counting come in when you land on a Hide space - you are supposed to count your 10 rods out loud (skip counting) and your units and then determine who has the least/greatest. At first glance it seems a little pricey, but it is definitely worth it! It says it's for 8-year-olds, but I think it is best for an advanced 4-year-old, or 5 or 6 year-olds. Definitely a great game though!

It is helpful to have an adult set up game and show children how to play.
This educational game is an engaging and fun way for young children (ages 6-9) to practice and review concepts of place value.

Great game, but does not teach 100's place
This game is great for teaching ones and tens place values, adding and subtracting, and mental math. It can definitely be used for children under 8 years old, and is probably best for 1st to 2nd grade. The manipulatives included are awesome for helping the kids see the numbers they are learning about. The game does not, however, teach the hundreds place, just FYI. Once a player reaches 100, the game is over. If you are looking for a game to teach the 100's place value, this is not the best.

Not for 8 and up!
My daughter got this game for Christmas when she was 7 or 8. We forgot to play it until now, and she's 9. The questions on the board that you solve as you go around are extremely simplistic, almost entirely single digit addition/subtraction. The easiest is 1 + 1 and the hardest is 13 - 9. It baffles me why Amazon says 7 and up and the box says 8 and up. According to the Common Core, adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers is a 1st grade skill--I'm pretty sure my daughter was adding/subtracting single digit numbers in kindergarten just as part of the regular curriculum. There are a few "Jungle Cards" where you have to roll 2 dice and find the sum and determine if the sum is odd or even. Otherwise, this is extremely low level Math, waaaay below an 8 year old who is meeting grade standards. That being said, the game is cute, and my daughter still enjoyed it, even if it was extremely easy for her. I like that it reinforces that 10 1's is 10 and that 10 10's is 100 using manipulatives.

2nd purchase!
2nd Graders LOVE this game!! I had one for at least 7 years and the cards are on their last legs but Im still keeping the old one becausenuts it's so popular. I just had to get a newer one. Great for 1st grade too. The kids practice basic additon and subtraction facts and place value, composing and decomposing with models. I love when they have to whisper! Get you one!!
