They are a good size though. It is really neat stuff! **Q: Is this rock painted?** A: Yes!!! **Q: Can it be used in a fresh water aquarium?** A: Calcium rocks like sea shells in fresh water will leach out calcium and slowly dissolve. Will make you water turn to hard water over time. I would get plastic version if you like the reef rock style. **Q: Does this need to be rinsed and soaked in R/O water before putting in tank?** A: It should be rinsed, the purpose of buying this rock is to *not* soak it. The coatings on it are meant to soak into the water in the tank to accelerate the adoption of new water to mature it quicker. I have built 3 aquariums with it, and it goes well, but I have had to black them out twice to kill off algae blooms. Bare rock is better if you intend to control all aspects of the maturity. It was packaged very well. Only had one small piece break off, which was not a big deal, all the other pieces where intact. I put the white spot where the piece broke off towards the back and placed the smaller piece on the sand bed. There were 4 pieces, all were gorgeous and much larger than I anticipated which worked out great in my 110 gallon tank. The coloring was perfect as well, blended in beautifully with my existing rock.
