It has a high ratio of animal products and protein which is important for a puppy's development. Some of the alternatives have lentils, peas and potatoes that some studies now suggest *may cause heart problems in some dogs by interfering with taurine absorption (which is one reason I recommend this over the grain free version). Two different vets also recommended avoiding the grain free dog foods. So far my puppy seems extremely happy, healthy and energetic, after several months of eating this food. She has grown significantly more than most dogs in her breed while still having a lean athletic build.
