I don;t know how, it is a thick plastic on the blades and the hilt seems very sturdy. If you're an adult just looking for a costume or display piece it's ideal, and the cheapest option. Even if you give it to a small child, if you just tell them to be a little careful and not smash it into concrete as hard as they can, you should be fine for normal play. There is a small plastic locking system to keep the blades inside, and maybe those little arms can break off, but it is very sturdy and a fine product. Maybe they meant the lights went out? I'm not going to smash mine and find out, but I'm telling you it's not flimsy and doesn't look or feel cheap. It's basically the same product I bought back in 1999 when Phantom Menace came out, except I'd swear this version is sturdier. Included are pictures of it lit up in a dark room, and a size comparison to two regular lightsabers I joined into a double. So trust me, I know these lightsabers, and this is a good one.
