Necessary for the new cans.
The old valves like this are designed to puncture and seal the small single-use refrigerant cans. They have a sharp pin that pierces its way into the top of the metal can top, and retracts to allow the refrigerant to flow. Since the can now has a punctured top, the valve needs to remain attached to the can until it is completely used. These new valves are designed for the newer small cans. The new cans look like the old ones, but have a valve instead of a solid top. The new style valve presses and opens the can's valve, and then allows it to close when backed-off. This makes it so that the valve can be removed from the can between uses, without leaking.Because the old and new valves have different pins, and operate in opposite directions, the correct one must be used, based upon the type of can it will be used with. So, even if you have an old valve that still works perfectly, you will need one of these new ones if you end up with any of the newer refrigerant cans.

Heavy brass, works great
I generally judge this kind of stuff by how much it weighs and did they skimp on the metals. They did not. This tap works great and did not leak. That is about all you can ask for!

Very nice refrigerant kit for DIY
Last summer was the first time ever replacing an AC compressor. I rented the tools except for the can tap, and the tap I got for $10 was a piece of garbage. Leaked and was poorly made...This one is much nicer, and has extra components. Everything about it is of a higher quality - well worth the price. The garbage one is getting tossed.

Great value
Good value set for adding refrigerant to your cars a/c system. Living in Florida a/c in your automobile is a must. And being able to do it yourself. Not only saves you time but also a lot of money.

Nice quality tools.
To be honest I didn't read the details when I ordered this. I thought I was getting a standard 1/4" tap valve that works with R11 flush cans. Due to the fact that it's for 1/2" threads I won't be using this that often. Regardless it's a very good quality tool for the price. It also comes with spare gaskets, valve stems and a stem removal tool for 2 different size stems including the standard refrigeration type which I will definitely be using so I'm still happy about the purchase. This is definitely worth buying, just be sure you're getting what you acctually need.

Better than HF one I got
I got a HF one of these earlier this year to top off my 2013 Q7 system, which just needed a slight nudge to be back blowing cold, and I could not get that one to NOT leak. . . the can then wouldn't re-seal itself. This seems to have fixed that issue - its a high quality basic item, with a few extras.

So glad to have the right can tap/valve for my A/C manifold gauge set
I have been using one of those cheap can taps for years. This one is such an upgrade to my A/C tools. To match up, I had to use the supplied adapter to hook up to my specific hose (the yellow one in the picture). Both the tap/valve and the schrader valve R&R tool are of good quality, as are the seals. Two thumbs up, especially for a product selling for under $10.

Quality valve
Quality valve. You will not be disappointed. The only thing lacking really are the instructions, which as someone else said you probably wouldn't be ordering this if you didn't already know how to use it. Great buy at a great price.
