I live aboard a 50' 1955 vessel and one of the heads needed the pump rebuilt. I bought a replacement that bolted right in. Altho the head worked fine it was "stinky" at times. Finally figured out that the failed joker valve that wasn't included in the replacement pump was the reason. It works great now. If you have a older PAR/Jabsco brand head get this valve in addition to the rebuild kit.

The website material I read indicated that if you can see light through your joker valve it's time to replace it. My Model 37010 was getting backwater into the bowl. I checked and sure enough the joker valve appeared to meet Jabsco's test for replacement. The new one arrived and to my disappointment appeared to have an even wider slit right out of the package. I could not reach anyone by phone at Jabsco so I called a supplier. The assistant there advised that if the valve had an open slit it was likely faulty. He then checked the 2 he had in stock and discovered they had the open slits. He surmised that perhaps that is how they came now and that maybe the water pressure back on it would cause it to close. So I went ahead and installed the new valve, which of course is not a fun job. I get more backwash with it than before and the bowl in fact fills faster than it can empty.
