Product Description DVD Special Features: Dolby Digital 5.0 English Subtitles: English, English for the hearing impaired, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish .co.uk Review The Next Best Thing offers the pairing of Rupert Everett and Madonna and you'd be hard-pressed to find a modern-day couple as impossibly glamorous; their casting as common folk in the gay-parenting drama is just one of the film's myriad problems (have we ever needed to see these two pushing grocery carts in a supermarket?). Best friends in sun-dappled LA (he's a landscaper, she's a yoga instructor), Abbie (Madonna) and Robert (Everett) fall into an amorous embrace on a fateful Fourth of July after a few too many martinis. Robert's gay, which complicates things; even more complicating is Abbie's confession a few weeks later that she's with child. Six years later, Robert, Abbie, and their son Sam are all living together peacefully and happily--that is, until a hunky investment banker (Benjamin Bratt) starts making eyes at Abbie, throwing their carefully constructed dynamic into disarray. Lazily directed by Oscar-winner John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy) with an eye towards his actors' muscle tone rather than characterisations (even the kid does yoga), the faults in The Next Best Thing aren't solely on the shoulders of its miscast stars, but rather the painfully inept screenplay by Tom Ropelewski (Look Who's Talking Now). With cardboard dialogue that sounds like bad first-draft material--including wailing by Madonna about how she can't find a man (ha!) and a gym-buffed Everett complaining about gay male body image (double ha!)--the movie stumbles from domestic comedy to custody-suit tragedy when it takes a bizarre left turn in the third act. Any statements about new definitions of family are buried underneath these dubious events, which (of course) provide teary courtroom outbursts for both leads. Everett has a quick way with a one-liner, and Madonna is more relaxed than she's ever been in a film, but Schlesinger just tosses them in front of the camera with no help whatsoever; the supporting cast, including Lynn Redgrave, Neil Patrick Harris, and Illeana Douglas, is also left to flounder inexplicably. There's a thoughtful and provocative movie to be made about gay parents, but The Next Best Thing certainly isn't it. --Mark Englehart, .com

A Great Feel Good Back too 2000’s movie one too watch on a lazy Sunday Afternoon.
This is despite having awful reviews which are only 19 percent Rating on Rotten Tomato’s and the movie from a reviewer is not exactly a good review for a movie you might want too see it goes like ‘’Story Elements clash and Acting falls short ‘’ . I am a massive fan of Madonna and already have Desperately Seeking Susan in my Madonna DVD collection so I had too see this it is a comedy set well almost 20 Years since it came out in the millennium , it is about Women called Abbie who has had a string of not very committed men she decides I believe she is about 34 , she wants a baby but she has a great friend in Robert played Hilariously by Rupert Everett, problem him being gay then one night after one too many drinks in a massive big wonderful mansion which is Roberts , Abby is dressed in 20’s High Society Flapper they have sex Abby wakes up the next day in Mink Fur everything is absolutely going well until she tells him she is pregnant though they will never fully have a loving relationship they decide too be reasonable for their son Sam and live too together though sharing Separate beds Abbie meets a new very attractive lover called Ben a Investment Banker she goes too Beach with Ben , Robert is well acting highly jealous and more like well a bit of a dork in my opinion there is a twist as he is not little Sam’s dad after all but he raises the child with her a custody battle starts as he is furious she kept it from him for six years, He tries too take her too court, also it has the song cover of Don McLean’s 1971 song American Pie this movie is ok it is a well crafted story and I think the bad reviews are absolutely not justified I also think it has a good real life Comedy element dealing with a 21st century element of the social economic differences in Family life a women raising a child with her best friend who she will never love as he is homosexual, and his awareness towards that how he feels it reminds of her role in comedy I love that Movie From 1985 Desperately Seeking Susan, Madonna is a good actress and looks absolutely beautiful Abby is a Yoga Teacher by Job Madonna is a well known Yogi, and also Abbie is vegetarian though it is quite funny she bites into a beef burger with her pregnancy carvings, it has quite a usual ending . Do watch If You like Movies Like Sarah Jessica Parker I don’t know how she does it 2011 , Just Go with it Jennifer Anniston and Adam Sandler 2011 , and The Wedding Planner Jennifer Lopez 2001 Knocked Up 2007 Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogan I loved watching as a Big Madonna Fan was great too add this too my Rom Com and Madonna Movie Collection .

BRILLIANT FILM
Reading some of the reviews I thought this film would be rubbish. It was great to watch with good performances from Rupert Everett and Madonna with a good and convincing performance by a young boy called Malcolm Stumpf (Star of "Wild Tigers i Have Known (a brilliant film) ). Though I could find no mention of his name on the DVD case, when he was one of the leading actors. A film I will watch again and again.

Not the best film!
It's ok if there is nothing else to do but the acting is poor and the storyline jumps 5 then 10 years, could have been so much better!

Not a Romcom but a Decent Relationship Drama
This is not the best film ever made, but nor is it as bad as many reviewers would have you believe. The problem really seems to be the marketing of the film. Labeling it as romance and comedy leads viewers to expect a fluffy romcom with a happy ending that will leave everybody in a good place and the audience with a smile on their faces. But this film is a relationship drama. You know right from the start that Robert (Rupert Everett) is Abbie's (Madonna) gay best friend, not a potential new boyfriend. She has just broken up with her partner, he consoles her. After a few drinks they spend a night together (which the audience knows is a mistake, not a U-turn in sexual orientation for Robert) and soon after Abbie finds she's pregnant. They decide to live together, without any pretense of being anything else than what they are, and bring up their child together. Robert has his affairs, which Abbie tolerates, but he does his best to be a good father to his son. However, when Abbie meets a man and decides to move across the country to New York with him, planning to bring her son with her, an ugly custody battle ensues. And while so far everybody has been on their best behaviour playing happy families, albeit with a difference, now the uglier side of human nature comes to the fore and the young boy is left between two fighting parents. As is sadly often the case in the real world.Rupert Everett and Madonna as the two leads work just fine. Theirs aren't award winning performances, but they both look good on the screen and the dynamics in their dysfunctional ralationship/family in the film felt very real. If you're looking for an upbeat little romcom, stay away from this, but if you like the actors and are good with a drama that goes to darker places, this may work for you very well.

A GREAT FILM!!
I heard a lot of bad reviews about this film and decided to buy it and make my own decision. When I watched it I was amazed, Madonna is great and this film is a must see. After I watched it I recommended it to all my friends and the ones who watched it loved it too! This film is brilliant and it only got bad reviews because the press love to slag off Madonna.

Don't waste your money!
Rupert Everett is good and Benjamin Bratt is easy on the eyes, but Madonna's "acting" is excruciatingly bad and the plot has very little credibility. Skip this one.

Nice chick-flick!
I really enjoyed this film a lot! I don't understand why the rating isn't better! I think the friendship in the film is very believable and I could really identify because of that.I recently bought this film as a present, but I would really like to have it myself too!

Take a deep breath, relax - and enjoy!
Have you ever bought at the stock market when everybody told you to sell - and won? That's what happened to me with this film. After buying almost all of John Schlesinger's films, I hesistated before ordering this one - in view of all that criticism. But then I assumed that - 1) Schlesinger cannot suddenly make a bad film after making so many excellent ones, and - 2) if so many bad things are said about a film it must somehow be good. Luckily, I was right this time.Perhaps much of all that criticism springs from unjustified expectations. Let me try to put two points right: First: this is not a film about Madonna, or by Madonna. She is just an actress here - and a good one, just right for the part. Schlesinger does not present her as a singer or a sex symbol - but as a person. Secondly: Nobody has made a promise that this will be an in-depth, politically correct exploration of gay life. This is just a film - and an entertaining one. There is no law in the land that says a gay person cannot be at times a trifle ridiculous or sentimental, like other persons. Therefore I recommend you follow the advice Madonna gives in her part as a Yoga teacher: Take a deep breath and relax - just enjoy this as another very good Schlesinger film - a real work of art.

A very cathartic experience.
I had moved to France from the UK , back in 2002 and I have created my life there in the intervening years. As a fan of Madonna's, I had not yet seen this film, but I had heard a lot about it., I finally saw this film today, in 2022. I can honestly say it gives me major feels. Watching it, I laughed, I cried. There were moments that it broke my heart ! This film seriously resonated with me at times, with friendships and elements in my life. I recently had to deal with these emotions on a very raw level, and this film helped get a lot of emotions out of my system ! A sincere thank you to all those who were involved in the making of this film ! xx <3 xx

Best Madonna Movie EVER!!
I've been wanting this movie on DVD for a very long time. So happy to finally own my very own copy. This is in my opinion one of Madonna's best movie roles and acting jobs.
