Brilliant as always, despite the lack of glitter
We love the What the Ladybird Heard series so were eagerly anticipating the release of this latest Christmassy themed one. The story itself is utterly brilliant, probably my second favourite after the original itself. It's familiar, humorous and set on Christmas Eve. What's not to love? The only drawback, as highlighted by other reviews, is that unfortunately the book does not contain the usual glitter, which most fans of the series are use to. I was sadly expecting this, as I'd noticed that the previous books have all been re-released over the past couple of years without glitter. In fact, I believe the previous release (What the Ladybird Heard at the Seaside) only ever contained glitter in the hardback version. By the time it was released in paperback, they seemed to have done away with the famous glittery ladybird which helped to make this series so popular. I can only assume this is a cost cutting decision, as I really can't think why else such a decision would have been made when the glitter was such a popular element of this series (and all of Donaldson and Monk's other past collaborations). I am still giving it 5 stars, as the story itself is excellent and I'm sure it will still be thoroughly enjoyed by the 3-7 age group. However, toddlers who were previously drawn in by the glittery textures may sadly be less interested now until they're old enough to appreciate the actual storyline. I would still highly recommend this book as, at the end of the day, high-quality literature will always trump glittery gimmicks, as disappointing as the absence of glitter might be to some.
