You want to position the HushBump on the door frame where the edge of the door makes initial contact with the frame when it closes. This may be several points around the door frame and require two or more bumpers. As long as the surface of the door frame is clean you can move the bumpers around on the frame to find the positions that give you the best results.

can these be shock absorbers for a phone case? I'm looking for extra protection for my phone, and kinda feel these may help, but I wanna make sure.

I would say no. They would probably not stick to your phone that well and while they are on your phone they will get dirty. Think of those sticky rubber hand toys you get from the quarter vending machine. It's rubber will collect hair and dirt just the same way. Try an otter box. They are great and I have 3 young kids. Haven't lost a phone to falls yet, but not for lack of trying.

Exterior are usually much heavier than interior doors. They also have a weather sealing strip where the HushBump would normally go, so we would not recommend them in your situation. However, there are mechanical door devices that can be applied to exterior doors to create as slower close that will greatly reduce the noise.
