Q: How do you adhere these flat against a wall? There is no flat spot on the back for tape.

Mine came with a thin thread attached. I used that and some shipping tape to attach them to a cinder block wall. The tape has held all year. Or you can hang them from a ceiling the same way.

Q: how would you attach these to a gift?

If it's a big gift, you could probably tie one on with ribbon (they are pretty large). I don't think glue dots or folded-over tape would be strong enough to hold them on. I have some double-sided carpet tape that would probably hold them on, but you'd have to put it all over the back. Your best bet would be to tie on with ribbon.
