Nice portable air hood
The air hood that came with my apartment doesn’t work well, and the house is always full of food smells. However, this portable hood is quite useful! Recommended for apt use! It’s a great value for the money—the airflow is strong enough, and it features activated carbon to eliminate all odors!

So convenient
What a great product! I did not want the cost of a pop up vent in my island nor did I like to look of a hood. This is the perfect solution. A bit loud but the convenience outweighs this. Love it!

IT MOSTLY WORKS! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
As an apartment dweller with a range hood that doesn't vent to the outside, there are certain types of cooking that I avoid because of all the smoke that results. Then I read a solid review for the AirHood on Serious Eats, a website for avid cooks like myself, and I decided to give it a try... but I wasn't fully convinced it would really work.So my test was simple: unbox it, plug it in, then see how it does when I sear a rib-eye steak in a blazing hot cast iron pan. Normally, that would produce a guaranteed fog of smoke that sets off the smoke alarms and lingers in the apartment for days. If the AirHood didn't work, it was going right back to Amazon. But to my surprise, it really worked! There was virtually no smoke in my apartment after searing. A few things you should know:As others have noted, it's really loud, surprisingly so for its size. Perhaps no louder than my range hood fan on high, but that's really loud, too.It did not remove odor nearly as well as it did smoke -- I could definitely smell that I had seared a steak in the apartment, which isn't a bad thing, but if odor removal is a high priority for you, this may not be your device. If you plan to use this with a gas stove, be aware that the manufacturer recommends the wired version only. I primarily use gas, but I have an outlet near my stove, so plug-in wasn't a problem. I am thrilled that the AirHood will finally allow me to do certain kinds of frying and searing that I've avoided for years because of the smoke problem. I thought seriously about giving this five stars, but deducted on star for not removing odors as effectively as I believed it would. Nevertheless, if the smoke issue I have wtih the range hood fan sounds all too familiar to you, I highly recommend the AirHood. Thanks for taking the time to read my review and I hope you find it helpful in making a buying decision.

DOES NOT CLEAR THE AIR AT ALL
This does NOT clear the smoke and vapors from the cooktop unless you hold it directly over the pan.DO NOT HOLD IT OVER THE PAN. THAT IS DANGEROUS.Sorry for the over the top warning. But this product did NOTHING because the suction was poor. It has suction, but even though I was cooking two small 3/4" pork chops at medium high heat, and though the amount of smoke and gases were fairly minimal, the kitchen and hallway still filled with enough smoke to set off the smoke alarm. When I tilted the unit over the pan a bit and got within an inch or two of the rim of the pan, it was able to capture some of the gas and smoke. But not enough to prevent the alarm from sounding again. And the amount of smoke produced was far less than one would get if one used cast iron for a steak. I used hex-clad, avocado oil (has a high burn temp point), and seared for 3 min on each side. I spent nearly all that time trying to get the fan in a position where it would capture the smoke/fumes/gas. Waste of time and effort.I wish I'd listened to the other reviewers who basically said the same thing - that it doesn't work. I returned it. It's basically a toyish type of device. Just say NO.

A lot of hype for nothing
Pure and simple, this thing does not work. Made a dish with multiple aromatics and did nothing but make a lot of noise. We even tried it next to boiling water in a pan to see how much it affected the flow of the steam. It did very very little. 2 stars for concept but save your money!

The Best Vent!
Excellent draw! On the lowest setting it pulled all the smoke from the cast iron while searing a Pittsburg rare steak. Minimal smell. Wish I had bought this sooner. It out does the vent hood.

Jury's still out on this...
I'm on the fence on this right now.We have a 95 year-old beach bungalow that doesn't have a place for a stove fan (it's on an inside wall with a cabinet right above the stove) and I have to clean like a madwoman to keep on top of the grease film (we also have open shelves)...so was very interested in this product.Got online and looked at some YouTube reviews/videos and decided:1. it's not a terrible noise - we have a high end exhaust fan at our main house that sounds pretty loud too so I'm thinking it's the nature of the beast.2. It's easy to stow3. The cord storage is a pain - i coil it up and then put a Velcro cord holder on it - stuffing it back into a little indent in the back is not gonna happen...4. I know it's designed by folks that are too-cool-for-school, but I have to believe that if it were rectangular instead of circular it would function better for two burner cooking - who really cooks with just one burner going except if you live in a dorm?5. The handle should be removable. All that said, it is better then nothing. It does suck up steam from a boiling pot really well on even the lowest setting...but I'm still considering how well it will help control grease in the air.I'll get back to you after a couple of months.

Elevate it using a spare pot for improved performance
For what it is it works pretty well. Next best thing to an overhead hood.
