Pawns, Lies, and Deception
3.5 stars - Jack O’Reagan has created quite the situation with Maeve Reilly, his sister's childhood friend. OK, fine, he didn't create the situation, but he certainly took advantage of it. Even though they are both horrible liars and keep plenty of secrets, I mostly liked this. They are also awful communicators, even as he publicly claims her, which drove me batty. There isn't an HEA for them here. There are storylines that will continue into the next book for another couple. Maybe we'll get more than heated glances and misunderstandings there. Here's hoping! 🤞

an ok book ... just not for me
Several things about giving this rating ... the writing itself wasn’t awful and the editing was at least good. I found myself skimming quite a bit, over all the storyline was interesting. My dislike which seems cliche' is ......Maeve’s relationship with Jack, being she was mostly too not smart to have any ambition to live a lot of the time. I know I know it was written for that to be the case still it was a tad boring with her actions ...Maeve was friends with Jack’s sister Dana. We learn Maeve came from a poor background with an alcoholic mother and delinquent father. Dana was the sheltered mafia princess, but she and her mother were kind to Maeve. At the early onset as children ..Jack calls Maeve scum and tells her that their father does not want Dana to be friends with her. He tells her never to come around again. He more or less uses words to destroy any hopes she might have dreamed. She runs home to find her father is abandoning them. He destroys the rest of her heart. The writing itself was such that I felt my heartbreak for Maeve’s devastation. Her mother has never shown her kindness, and puts all the blame on the six-year-old child that she is the reason her father left.... adult life is even harder for Maeve..She’s in university(college) and returns home to find her family being roughed up by some thugs that her brother owes a lot of money to. Her brother is a drug addict and her mother is still an alcoholic. The thugs say they will be back and take Maeve if she does not come up with the money to pay them. In desperation she turns to Jack. This is where it gets sketchy. Jack destroyed her childhood heart, SO he requires her to sign a contract stating she will sleep with him and become his in exchange for this money, then he proceeds to lock her up, she runs away trying only to help her brother and Jack kills a man for touching his possession....(while leaving her beaten brother for dead when she tries to hand off the money with the thugs and is assaulted). She screams at Jack and tells him she will never forgive him. Cian lets her know he will save her brother.....Yet she can’t help the feelings she has for Jack. He steals all of her freedoms, keeps her locked up, reneges on the agreement and says she has to stay with him forever, and leaves her with a guard who threatens her with physical harm as well as with raping her. But even through all of this, she just can’t help kissing him or leaning into him when he touches her face. She is so in love with Jack and her desires for him leave her presented as a doormat, weak . She’s written as sometimes tough, sometimes just down right dumb blonde type (no offense to blondes) persona. it's hard to believe she’s carried the weight for her family for all these years, and has no sense of self-preservation or even common sense muchless a backbone. I love a good enemies to lovers but for this reader this is not that.....the writing tries to present that Jack has always loved her, even though he’s done nothing to show it. Or even though he does horrible things to her, things that have destroyed her emotionally and she’s even sworn to never forgive, yet all it takes is one one look from him and she can’t help but love him. ... so sadly with all the other Lies and things that happen .. was not to happy ...

FANTASTIC!
Mafia Prince is the first book I've read by Vi Carter and I must say, I was not disappointed. This is Jack and Maeve's story. She has no choice but to turn to him for help in this dark yet steamy romance. The chemistry between these two is 🔥🔥🔥. The storyline keeps you on the edge of your seat. I couldn't wait to download the second book in this series. Absolutely fantastic!

Mafia Prince
Mafia Prince is the first book in Vi Carter’s Young Irish Rebels. It is set in Ireland and depicts that inner workings of the Irish Mafia (Mob). This is part of a four-book series that chronicles the O’Reagan Crime family. In this book, readers meet the eldest son of Liam O’Reagan, the patriarch of the O’Reagan crime family, Jack. He is the apparent heir to the crime family. Liam sculpted Jack into the type of man like himself, ruthless, self-serving, dictatorial, and heartless man. Maeve Riley is a friend of Jack’s sister, Dana. Maeve’s brother catapults her into devasting situation, and she turns to Jack for help. Subsequently, Jack decides to become romantically involved with Maeve. Maeve does not fit into Liam’s plan and he sets about eliminating her. Will Liam be successful? Will Jack stand up to his father? This is the first time I read Ms. Carter’s work and I enjoyed her writing style easy to follow. Her lead characters are multi-dimensional with emotional demons. As readers get know them, they become likeable. Her secondary characters are also multi-faceted and not necessarily likeable. Her dual plot line is well thought out and allows readers to witness how some of the characters evolve while others remain static. I appreciate how she uses flash backs to reveal Maeve’s and Jack’s the hidden demons. Likewise, I liked how she uses dialog and a dual point of view to build tension. She also builds tension through the manifestation of Liam’s hold over his family. Her descriptive language creates vivid scenes. She adds suspense to her plot with the introduction of several and unexpected plot twists. Readers find subterfuge, revenge and betrayal. Overall, this was a very captivating read and I am going to read the rest of this series.

Amazing Read
This was an amazing book & my first Vi Carter novel. I loved the chemistry between Jack & Maeve. What we believed was an intense dislike between their younger characters, evolved into a lot more when they reunited as adults. Like in many novels, both the characters misinterpreted the others feelings & hid their emotions from one another. I hope to read more about Jack & Maeve’s relationship in some of the other books in this series. This book was a great start to this ‘Young Irish Rebels’ series!

Great Mafia Romance
I've read and enjoyed many Mafia Romances (my favourites are still Danielle Lori's Made Series ❤ and Cora Reilly's Born In Blood series ❤) but in some of them, we don't get a real glimpse of the evil deeds that these Mafia anti-heroes do. Not in this book by Vi Carter. And I really liked reading the different interactions between these men and their enemies, within their own family. The book is really dark and gritty at times. And I liked that it's the love story between Jack and Maeve that tones down all the dark aspects of the Mafia world.I also enjoyed the sex scenes: they seem real and all steamy at the same time. Like all their other scenes. The story was really captivating. This is the first book I read by this author and I will check out the other books.
