I did have to lightly sand a few spots with some fine grit sandpaper. They sanded nicely, I wiped them down, hand washed & dried them & laid them on a dry towel overnight. I then did a light oil treatment on them with some food grade Boos oil. This oil was recommended for use on my John Boos wooden cutting board. The oil preserves the wood, cuts down on staining & repels water absorption when hand washing. The bowls of the spoons aren't very deep, almost flat, but I really like this set and have used all the utensils. Each item performed well and as expected. I recommend & am happy with my purchase. They are 100% pure, natural wood. **Q: Can I just use olive oil on them? Would it work as well as mineral oil?** A: Thank you for your good question. There are two opinions regarding which oil to apply on wooden spoons. One school of thought is to use oils which are stable and not go rancid, like mineral oil or walnut oil or almond oil. The opposite school of though is to use any cooking oil is fine because if you cook often, you will continuously renew/oil your wood utensils and therefore the oil will never get to sit in your utensils long enough to go rancid. If you think you will use that wood spoon very often, then you can use cooking oil. Otherwise, mineral oil is probably safer bet. **Q: Does the turner/spatula work on stainless pans? They have held up really well and feel very durable for the price point. My only complaint is that two of the spoons arrived very rough feeling (almost like they needed to be sanded).
