A terrifying new addition to the Dracula legend, based on a single chilling chapter from Bram Stoker's classic novel, The Last Voyage of the Demeter chronicles the doomed journey of a merchant ship ferrying 50 mysterious wooden crates from Carpathia to London. As they set sail, the crew soon discover they are not alone on board: at night they are stalked by a hidden passenger whose monstrous thirst for blood turns the trip into a harrowing nightmare of tension, terror and unfathomable evil. Review: This is a good addition to the story. - This is a very interesting take on a small section of the original story. All we know from the book and films is that the Dracula ship arrived with a dead crew and boxes of earth. This shows that tragic voyage in grim detail and with great suspense and art. It is well made, well acted and very griping. I was rather surprised at how well it “fleshed out” a minor part of the story. (Pardon the pun) I recommend this film as a stand-alone and for Dracula buffs. It is spooky and raw but great fun and very well done. I do not recommend the newest Nosferatu film version of the story. Stick to the 1922 original or the 1979 remake also a classic. BTW His name was Vlad III. Dracula was a modern form of his title of knighthood from his father Vald II. He was given the Order of the Dragon (Dracul) for defending the land against the Moslem Turks. HIs son took the Title of Draculea meaning Son of the Dragon but it can also mean Son of the Devil as the word has a double meaning. His tomb was empty, not because he was flying around and biting people but because he was killed in battle about 1476. His head was sent to the Sultan as a prize but the rest was left to rot. A tomb had been prepared in a small island church but never really used cept for some animal bones found, probably to profane the tomb by his enemies, of which there were many. Also, the first film is Nosferatu not Dracula as Murnau the director could not get the rights from the author’s wife who demanded a steep price and accused Mernau of copyright violation. He had changed the names and locations but kept the basic story. The court ordered the film destroyed but gratefully this was not done. A few years later she allowedly the creation a true Dracula play based on the book and film done by Bela Lugosi. The 1979 Nosferatu remake used the original Dracula character names. Do yourself a favor if you have not seen it. Review: Very Good Film That Takes It's Time to tell a story. - Yes, it’s based on one chapter of Bram Stoker’s famous novel. It’s over two hours long. But there’s never a dull moment and the longer length allows room for a good deal of character development. Everyone on board has a background story to tell, especially Clemons and Anna. I found the film absorbing and more complete than many other versions. It was the Bela Lugosi version in 1931 and F. W. Murnau’s “Nosferatu” version in 1922 that had scenes of Dracula stalking the crew aboard the Demeter. Today’s audiences have become spoiled by the thrill a minute horror films and commercials that show 200 images in one minute. I’m older and was brought up on reading as well as well as film. Perhaps that’s why I’m willing to work a little more for my entertainment. Frankly, it’s more pleasurable and more fun to bide my time.

A good old scary movie.
It's a good old scary movie. No, overdone jump scares—no gross outs or fancy CGI, it does have it, but nothing that screams at you. I wish I had seen this in theaters. Better than I expected. Worth a watch!

Not as bad as you've heard, and much better than you might think, but it does have faults
While critics disliked the film and it did not do well commercially, I thought it was mostly entertaining, beautifully shot, with good performances. I disliked the ending, which really missed the mark, despite having great potential for a conclusion that could have tied it into the source material effectively, without violating the established narrative. Instead, the ending does not sit well with the novel on which the film is based. The film also attempts to bring 21st century values into the setting, which makes some aspects of the plot a bit awkward. Dracula is also represented in a way that is more consistent with what you've seen in films like the original silent Nosferatu (no suave, sophisticated aristocrat here), focusing on his more beastly, monstrous form. I recommend the film, because the cinematography and directing are excellent and most of the film is highly enjoyable.

"..BRILLIANT DRACULA MOVIE.."
PLOT... Based on a single chapter, the Captain's Log, from Bram Stoker's classic 1897 novel "Dracula", the story is set aboard the Russian ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo, unmarked wooden crates from Carpathia to London. The film details the strange events that befell the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a terrifying presence on board the ship. When it finally arrived near Whitby Harbour, it was derelict. There was no trace of the crew. Its been a while since we've seen a decent vampire movie, especially when it comes to Dracula! The last voyage of the Demeter (2023) is a great horror movie that's original and has new ideas for a fun story for the character Dracula. The isolated setting on a ship is a good scary set up, much like an Alien movie but at sea instead of space! Everyone trapped and being picked off one by one, the movie has a decent cast and Dracula himself is a scary looking devil like monster. All the effects in the movie are a good decent looking budget, a mix of good CG and practical blood and gore! well worth checking out, one of the best horror movies of 2023 and certainly one of the coolest Dracula stories in a long while. Blu-ray (US import) has a decent HD picture quality. (Not available in the UK) Features include commentary, deleted scenes and other featurettes (40mins) 2-Disc. DVD is Region 1 US only and Blu-ray is Region FREE and plays on UK players. Running time 1hr 59mins. Rated R for strong violence. 2023. English language movie. English subtitles. First press copies come with a nice slipcase with some slight embossing.

This is the version to get (US BR + DVD)
There's a region B version available in Australia that forces you to watch trailers that you can't skip and has no extras. I thought the days of these second-rate local releases had gone but clearly not. For hardly more this USA version has a barrel load of extras, commentaries and above all, joy of joys, must be region free. It played in my region B locked player without any issues.
