Returning after a near-five-year pause, Hywel Bennett stars once again as James Shelley, the erudite, philosophically inclined idler who elevated work-avoidance to an art form through an initial, massively popular six-series run in the early 1980s.These further series (initially titled The Return of Shelley) see the graduate and 'freelance layabout' returning to the UK after a stint teaching English abroad. When he left, the social landscape was changing fast and now he's shocked to see by how much. Middle-aged slobs have been banned from their origins, Yuppiedom is the name of the new game, and the only thing that's 'real' is 'estate'; an unforgiving new world personified by Shelley's frighteningly energetic new landlords, Carol and Graham...Featuring guest appearances from James Grout, John Woodnutt, Stephen Tompkinson, Clive Swift and John Cater among many others, this set contains every episode screened between 1988 and 1992, including the 1991 New Year special.

Excellent in all aspects, but the lack of subtitles let it down!
Received this 2 weeks ago. In this one, we see an older Shelley, who has trouble at Customs, because he doesn't look like his passport photograph! He also has a shock about English prices! This is known as "The Return of Shelley" and again, the picture is clear, and all the Christmas Specials for that period are in there. Shelley fans will love it.Unfortunately, it lets itself down due to the lack of subtitles! Fortunately, the speech is clear, and so I can watch and understand it without subtitles!Shame!

Comedic view on life
Hwyel Bennett is James 'Shelley' giving us his outlook on life and aspect of it. From politics, being unemployed, finding places to live and also at the start of the series (not in this box set) relationship and becoming a father.Well worth getting a copy

Highly recommended
Shelley is a classic comic character and as he gets older his observations on life get funnier so I prefer the later episodes.

Social history
I have liked everything Hywel Bennett did on film and TV, since the 1960s. The previous 6 series of Shelley were trickled out very slowly and it was good to discover the remaining 4 series in a boxset. I remembered watching the originals. It is interesting to see the parallels in the political climate throughout the 1980s and into the early 1990s, with how things are today.

Watchable episodes
I prefer the episodes in the earlier series (now in series 1 - 6) written by Peter Tilbury - these episodes have different writers not as good in my view, still watchable though, bought this to complete the series, .

Not quite as brilliant as the first 6 episodes
Not quite as brilliant as the first 6 episodes, but still both poignant and thoroughly entertaining. Also quite cheeky when seen with today's PC view.
