How does this differ from the standard media separator that frankford offers?

It has it's own bucket which the tumbler sits on catching all of the media, this system works great. Very easy to use.

can this be used to sift range lead?

Possibly, it would depend on how large the dirt, clay, rocks are that your trying to separate. Also, you may loose some of the smaller pieces of lead as they may fall through the slots. I use it for separating my cleaning media from the brass - and for that it works very well. A better means of separating lead may be with several screens in decreasing size.

Can this be used for a gem hunter

A very good question. This is primarily designed to separate ground up cleaning and polishing media like walnut shells, ground up concobs, to clean and polish used ammunition brass cases, empty of course. I believe if you plan to tumble rocks in it they would tear up the plastic. I can put 5 lbs of cases in and crank it around for a while and the media falls to the bottom of the container that the basket spins on. If you are looking for rubies in sand, I think it would be worth a try. But not wet sand. Dry sand, or everything would get gummed up. I don't understand how you would use this to separate out gems. If you want to polish stones you need a much more substantial motor driven steel tumbling chamber. Can you clarify your question a bit by telling me your imagined process? Thanks.
