Essential?
Maybe not - but if you are a keen cook, or maybe have babies to feed, this simple, strong, hand operated device is the classic tool for grinding and making purees. You don't have to skin and deseed tomatoes, for sauces and soups , for example and instead of buying prepared baby food, you can make it from ingredients you choose.

Traditional passatore
Love this item, itโs perfect to grind tomatoes for tomato sauce.

Good for making sauces
It is easy to use and clean but the food is not as smooth as pushing through a sieve

very pleased with the quality and functionality
Only took 10 days to arrive in the UK from Israel.... A genuine made in Italy Moulin Mill, with three grades of milling.... Works really well, very pleased with the quality and functionality. Thank you

This machine makes me happy
We grow lots of tomatoes so needed to speed up the process of making passata. This is the type of thing they use in Italy and they know about tomatoes! Easy to assemble. Make sure you fit the sieve plate the right way up (itโs not the way you think). Plop in some softened tomatoes and turn the crank handle. Every now and then reverse the blade to clear the holes and collect the skins and seeds. Bellissimo!

No good
Looks perfect at first glance but there are two major problems. First the arrangement of three hinged hooks to hold the utensil steady on the bowl or pan, one at the front and two at the 120 and 240 degree positions. This is unstable on anything but a broad-based bowl of the perfect diameter. An arrangement of two hooks in front at the 60 and 300 degree positions with the third point of balance being the pan-handle of the machine would allow almost any size of bowl or pan to be used and be much more stable when sieving is taking place. Second, the pressure exerted by the spring is far too great given the rough surface of the sieves, making it hard to wind the handle when empty, let alone when in work and certainly impossible to hold steady on the bowl at the same time. Sorry but a definite FAIL. Interesting that some reviews give 5* and some 0*. Could there be two models in circulation under the same label?

Good buy
Easy to put together, easy to use and easy to clean. Don't know how I've managed without it for years.
