Review: A very stimulating collection of Dostoivesky's shorter fiction. - If you only know Brothers Karamazov or Crime and Punishment ( as I did) this collection of Dostoievesky's shorter works comes as a delightful surprise. There are some marvellous stories here and they show the author's range to have been much greater than is often assumed, including comedy and what amounts to magic realism. It has opened my mind as to Dostoievesky's importance and greatness. Review: Great - Great value for the money!

Has lots and lots of other stories as well as Notes From Underground.
Love Dostoevsky and will always recommend his books - I do find it odd that there were so many other stories included however, and that definitely bulks up the size of the book often, Notes From Underground only makes up a small portion of the page count. It's soft-back and the paper feels thin and lacks durability. I'd only buy this if you're looking to explore all of Dostoyevsky's other short stories as well as read Notes From Underground. The translation is decent and reads well with good prose.

Exceeded Expectations
Purchased under the assumption that this simply contained the short novella "Notes from Underground" by Fyodor Dostoevsky. When the book arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to realise that it was actually a complete collection of Dostoevsky's short fiction including all 16 short stories, and all 3 novellas. A vast amount of content for such a reasonable price, strongly recommend.

A difficult read.
It's a lovely looking edition but Constance Garnett's translations are dated and unwieldy. I couldn't finish the book and will perhaps look for a better, and more modern translation. Even the title Notes from Underground which has endured, is problematic as the correct translation should be Notes from the Crawlspace. The space under the floorboards basically.

For that extra special sense of authenticity, I took this book deep into a local cave visited only by bats and vagrants. With a box of candles, a lighter, and a package of thin mint cookies, I began to read aloud. To my surprise, both bat and hobo seemed drawn to my voice or maybe the flickering light and scent of delicious mint. I made it mid way through the book before a deep, productive cough set in with a terrible fever rendering me unconscious. After an unknown time passed, I awoke on the side of a nearby road by the siren of an approaching ambulance. My book was laying beside me but my candles, lighter, cookies, shoes and socks were missing as was my wallet. I lay here in my hospital bed typing this review on my roommate's smart phone while the nurses dutifully treat my pneumonia and rabies. I wish someone had told me what I'm sharing with you: there's no need to read this book underground.
