However, to activate its gelling properties, neutralization is required, as the raw polymer is acidic and only swells in water but does not form a gel until pH is adjusted. 1. Hydrating the Carbomer Basic Ingredients Distilled water: ~98% Carbomer 940 : 0.5–1% Process Slowly sprinkle Carbomer 940 into room temperature water , stirring gently to prevent clumping. Allow the polymer to hydrate for 20 to 60 minutes , depending on mixing speed. You may use a propeller or overhead mixer for faster dispersion. 2. Neutralizing (Activating) the Gel Once the Carbomer is fully hydrated and forms a viscous suspension, it needs to be neutralized to thicken into a clear gel.
