I like that it looks attractive and stylish. The base plate is quarter inch steel - SUPER STRONG and SUPER SUPPORTIVE! <edit Jan 6, 2024 - it is aluminum - refer bottom of this review> We tried different products before getting this. The problem with the other products with rails is she couldn't wipe herself easily because she couldn't spread her legs wide enough. With this, she can lift the arm(s) out of the way for wiping, but then when she needs to get up, then my mom can push herself up. The arms are left down so that she can get back onto the toilet by herself. I tried using her toilet and I can leave the arms down to wipe since there is nothing under the arms - I'm about another 40 or so pounds heavier than my mom. This is a very smart design! The support arms come with installation directions that were very clear. Our Kohler toilet had seat holes just wide enough so this would work for us. We got the arms tightened onto the base, took the seat off the toilet, positioned this onto the toilet, added the seat back, added the new bolts, and voila! Now, an elderly person likely isn't strong enough to be tightening this onto their own toilet, so plan to get help on install if you are disabled. I'm not sure she could even lift that baseplate on her own - quarter inch steel is HEAVY! Installation would never have been something my mom could have done on her own. Any handyman service or capable adult should be able to help install this. Now that these support arms are on, she is able to go to the bathroom without assistance and without needing extra shower cleanings. This is a wonderful product, giving her back some dignity and independence. I am so very glad I bought these toilet support arms. THANK YOU!! REVISED REVIEW - posted January 6, 2024 Since the original photos and original review, we ALL have grown to love this seat so very much! It has been the absolute best accessibility purchase yet made for my mom. Her health did take a turn for the worst (she is better now), in the hospital ER twice, and we thought we'd lose her. Her ability to control bodily functions really fell apart, so I ordered and got in a very nice, heated bidet toilet seat to replace the normal toilet seat as well as a power assisted flush toilet. The attachments for these were 1/2" holes and bigger bolts, larger than the available space/slits that come with the bottom plate. Right up until we'd take it off and began drilling, I thought it was a steel plate. However, it IS aluminum, so it is even nicer than originally thought. Now, drilling thick aluminum with a normal hand drill does take a metal drill bit from the local home improvement store, but at least it wasn't an all day affair needing a drill press like steel might have needed. We had already loved it, but now with the enhanced sanitation we added with upgraded plumbing, and being able to flip up the arms so when wiping my mom can spread her legs wide for improved sanitation, this is like 101 on a scale of 1 to 5. WE LOVE THIS HANDRAIL!!

Due to poor health at the age of 68, was having difficulty sitting & standing on standard size toilet. Bought rails first without checking if toilet had the proper screw mount seat system at the top. After checking, my seat attachment screwed into sides. Upon discovering, decided to get 21" toilet with top seat screws installed also. Having entire unit put together, found rails may not have been needed but found that I keep right arm down still grabbing it for stability when standing. With that being said, I love both toilet & flip back arms though forget myself when using any other toilet while in other homes or anywhere else. Forget myself & plop down on all others which throws me off balance. I generally had to hold a small room doorknob along with other hand using glass shower doors. Others I know use side wall & sink to assist when sitting & standing. These are heavy duty rails with flip back, anti-slip arms made of the highest quality materials. Am extremely pleased with this purchase. Update 3/8/26: Loved them so much purchased a second pair for a dear old friend.

We bought this for my 82-year-old mother who lives with us. She needed help getting on and off the toilet and the old fashioned chairs that actually look like a walker that go around the toilet were too big to fit in her bathroom. This worked great. It’s sturdy. It’s dependable. She can get up and down now just fine. It did require some finagling of my husband to get it to fit just right, but it really sturdy and looks nice.

Great item, really helps and easy installation

A very good functioning and attractive unit, but it took a handyman to install it. My toilet seat was not entirely compatible, and the retaining bolts and hardware were a bit too short to fasten the assembly to the toilet. There are good DIY videos online that can let you know quickly that that you’ll get in trouble; they, and the included instructions, will show you a seat with what the instructions call a “hinge” (no, not usual usage) that’s missing from my seat, making for different installation dimensions. Still, if you have lots of spare fasteners in your toolbox, it’s undoubtedly worth the purchase. That said, the manufacturer should provide instructions for installation with many seat types and toss in a few more fasteners.
