A Bargain ~ Worked instantly, and is very quiet!
Purchased to replace a failed drive in the DVR [for CCTV]. Easy to swap out generic dive - plugged it into DVR, powered up and it was "found" instantly by the DVR and started to record straight away. Waited 10 minutes, checked the drive and then watched the DVR playback - faultless in that it found and replayed recorded files seconds from install, in good HD quality too - very quick and also very quiet [an issue some have with these drives is the noise]. So very pleased, especially at this price, still working 100% after a week . Just want to add that I have no idea if this is new or a refurb, and don't really care, it was very cheap for what it is in comparison for others on Amazon [and elsewhere] and working is all I wanted and that's what these are! One word summary - bargain and just hope I don't have to add anything negative in a few months time when it is full and starts to overwrite itself :).

Ideal to use in a NAS box too!
I run a small server used as a virtual host, for my home business, web server, and home server. It's only a small HP micro server and it doesn't get too much abuse.Anyway, using a P410 RAID card, everything runs on a RAID 5 array. It was first using 4x 500GB second hand pipeline drives - I know, but money was tight. One of the 500gb started to show signs of failing so I've decided that over the course of the next 4 months I'll replace a drive a month with 1TB versions.Simple case of switching the drive, and withing 3 hours, I was back to having a fully redundant RAID 5 array again. These won't break any speed records, but that wasn't the main concern. The RAID 5 array increases read speeds anyway to ~300MB/s. The main concern is reliability, and that's where these disks excell when considering their cost. They are designed for 24/7 operation, and have a better non-recoverable read error rate by a factor of 10 compared to your typical desktop drive. They also run with a lower rpm, and this helps with lowering vibration and noise. NCQ also helps with keeping those access times down. They're not enterprise raid disks, but if you are on a budget and raw performance isn't your aim, then these are suitable alternatives.Brilliant drive, quite, nippy for its specs, and more reliable compared to a typical consumer hard drive. Can't complain. Amazon delivery was superb as usual too!

I checked out the old 500GB HDD for bad blocks and it passed No Errors
Ordered New HDD From Amazon ÂŁ45.68 to replace Hdd in my sky+HD box DRX890-CSegate ST1000VM002 Pipeline HD 1000GBPlug the Hdd into IDE-USB adapter or connect it internally to sata connector in your PCInitialise the Hdd in Windows Disk Management orin Linux Gparted Device Create Partition Table Select Partition Type msdos and Apply. The Sky+HD box will not do this initialisation but will format the disk for you.Replace the Hdd in the sky +HD box (Plenty of YouTube videos online)Power up the Sky+HD box. On the Sky Remote Press Services arrow and down to get Picture highlighted Press 01 Select, this will show a hidden menu, scroll to System reset then select. The TV will show HOUSEKEEPING and then Restart itself. The TV will show SKY+HD PLEASE WAIT then go blank. After a few minutes The centre LED display on the Sky+HD box should rotate anti-clockwise for a few seconds. This is when the Sky+HD box Formats the HDD and copies required files on to it.If the centre LED display on the Sky+HD box does not rotate anti-clockwise for a few seconds then check the Power And SATA connections to the HDD and that it is initialized.I had trouble with my Box not formatting the HDD (LED display on the Sky+HD box not rotating anti-clockwise for a few seconds). I found that the power connector plugged into the HDD was warped so the HDD was getting power to it intermittently thus causing the failed recordings. I spliced a new Power connector (I cut it off from an old PC Power supply) to the HDD. And it worked perfectly.I checked out the old 500GB HDD for bad blocks and it passed No Errors. The problem was the power connector all the time.It least I doubled the recording capacity of my Sky+HD box it was cheaper than the call out fee form SKY and I can use the old 500GB HDD in my PC.I have recorded a lot over the weekend and the drive has worked with no problems.

Failing Hard Drive, Not New
It wasn't packaged very well. Just in a brown bag with a smaller, thinly bubble-wrapped jiffy bag inside it, which contained the hard drive. It could easily have been damaged in transit, but I don't think that was the case. When I plugged it into my HDD reader, it would not initialise/format using the Windows Disk Manager without the drive disconnecting or hanging. When I managed to get it formatted using a different program, it froze up my computer for a few minutes before again disconnecting. I also tried plugging it into a different device and formatting it from there, but it just froze again there.I can only conclude that the drive is failing, as I have had other failing drives that do the same thing. The drive obviously isn't new. I am sending it back for a refund and will try a different drive.
