I hope this metal ring helps to give the rubber tips protection from the carbide tip so as to not wear holes in them. To be extra cautious, I'll likely remove the rubber tips for walks or hikes where the trail surface does not warrant them. Annoying but maybe necessary. Still love the poles though!
