Question 1

Can this scanner be used with passports?

Accepted Answer

Yes - It scans passports using the camera to decode the Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) found on passports and passport cards

Question 2

since it comes with a lifetime subscription service to the TokenWorks service installed in the device, is that a separate monthly fee?

Accepted Answer

No - there are NO monthly fees, No annual fees. A lifetime subscription means we provide updates to the software - like new drivers license formats, bug fixes, new features for free. This is for all owners for the device - so even if you sold it 1 year from now, the new owner would still get free software updates.

Question 3

Does this product have a magnetic stipe reader? or the capabitliy to read magnetic stripes on IDs?

Accepted Answer

It does not have a magnetic stripe reader because the magnetic stripe on drivers licenses is basically obsolete or redundant. Since March of 2011 when Michigan added the 2D barcode, every drivers license in the US and Canada has a PDF417 2D Barcode. Since that time several states which had both the magnetic stripe and barcode have dropped the magnetic stripe. There are only 17 states with both a magnetic and barcode on the drivers license and the only reason states keep the magnetic stripe on the drivers license is to support retailers in their state which have magnetic card readers. The barcode is a superior machine readable data stripe technology which is why states have moved away from the magnetic stripe.

Question 4

Is the device capable of connecting with a database to determine if the person is on the no fly list or other security database?

Accepted Answer

The no-fly list is not public and searchable only by the Department of Homeland Security. If you have access to the no-fly list or "other security database", then you could download that list into the scanner and check IDs against this list.
