Doc Martin: Complete Series Eight [DVD]

Entertainment at its very best
I've recently been unwell and unfortunately confined to bed for several weeks, but my illness was made very much more bearable by watching the Doc Martin DVD's. I'm lucky enough to own the entire series, and have watched every episode several times; but although I know them almost by heart, I still laugh again and again. The script and the acting by all the characters is excellent, but Martin Clunes is in a class of his own - truly superb. I believe the 10th and final series is being filmed at the moment, and I can't wait for it to become available on DVD. Thoroughly first-class entertainment.

THOROUGHLY ENJOYABLE PROGRAMME
I have to admit that it took me some time to come round to Doc Martin. Watched one episode when it first came out and didn't like it, but was persuaded to revisit the show earlier this year and have completely revised my opinion. It's not the greatest drama in the world, nor the funniest comedy but it does combine these elements with great charm and without an ounce of pretentiousness. Yes, it is escapist whimsy but it is done extremely well. Whether or not the quality of the first eight series can be sustained much longer is a moot point and I hope the makers will know when it's time to stop. In the meantime, however, it rightly deserves its place as one of the most popular and entertaining programmes on TV.

Compulsory buy if you love the series.
I was a bit hesitant about buying this series, as it isn't yet available second hand and several reviewers commented very adversely on the picture quality. However, it is quite acceptable. Admittedly, the opening sequence - which has been changed from earlier series - is indeed very fuzzy and poor, but once the actual drama starts if there is any slight reduction in picture quality over the pervious series, one soon forgets it in enjoying the drama- the bizarre local characters, the doctor's total absence of bedside manner combined with his extensive knowledge and ability to treat almost any condition, in any situation. All absolutely riveting. I can only say, if you've loved the series until now, just go ahead and treat yourself to Series 8. You won't regret it!

Return to form
Work prevents me from seeing the Doc on TV so the DVD purchase is always a necessity. Contrary to one of the reviews on here I actually thought Series 8 was a real Tour De Force and a return to form for Doc Martin. The last couple of series had possessed darker tones and become bogged down in the marital strife of the Ellinghams but I found myself roaring with laughter throughout this series. It was reminiscent of the lighter shades present in the early seasons. The moment during the finale' where PC Penhale hurriedly brings the Doc bottles of water for the emergency procedure during the tribunal saying, "I didn't know if you wanted sparkling or still Doc" caused me to spit my coffee down my shirt in hysterics. I'm still trying to remove the stain....great fun.

Sooo good
Having seen the whole series on Danish tv we knew that seeing it again what a must so last year I bought season seven and this year I bought season 1 to 6 + season eight for my wifes birthday. Soo funny, lost of laughs, we enjoyed seeing it all again, but to be true the picture quality of season eight was appallingly bad. We enjoyed the episodes, yes but good grief, I can’t believe that Amazon smells this at full price as the picture quality is about average to a veeery old VHS tape. Buy it for the show alone ‘cause while you are watching it you’ll enjoy it so much that you forget about it... promise.

You'll love it or hate it.
My wife and young daughter love it.After 7 series, I myself find the plots repetitive, often ludicrous, and (with one or two exceptions) the characters totally unlikeable. Martin Clunes is a great actor, but should not be allowed to work as a GP.
