Easy on the eye but harsh on the ear
These 3-way stereo speakers came in a blank white box and were less compact than I had hoped as no one had published their dimensions. Not until now:The XTC LSM1 Specifications:* 138x120x205mm (W*D*H)* 4” (100mm) 3 way foam edge paper* 1.6” (40mm) Polypropylene* 0.75” (20mm) Tweeter* Max power 60w* Impedance 8ohm* Frequency Response 80-20000Hz* Sensitivity 92DB/w/mThe overall build quality is good and for budget-priced speakers I was impressed with the finish and appearance. I particularly liked that they came with a metal mounting bracket as I planned to use these units as rear wall speakers in a 7.1 sound-system. There was a hideous “BLANKO” brand-label stuck on the speaker grills but it peeled off easily.... So they looked really good and I was expecting that their sound production would match this. I ran some comparison stereo tests and damn, it didn't...!The sound had a flat-audio reproduction which was dominated by midrange prominence. The units withstood increased volumes levels very well but this only highlighted the harshness of their character. Certainly not pleasant to my ears. The bland lifeless sound and lack of any “presence” was a glaring issue and audible failing. I was disappointed with this outcome.I opened up one of the speakers to examine the components and found that a basic capacitor frequency filter was used. Not an ideal set-up. Also an internal wire had been crushed and damaged when the rear chamber was screwed down during manufacture. Easy to fix but an unnecessary fault.Considering their low cost, I'm perhaps being too critical of these units by expecting audiophile results. They are well designed for wall mounting and the sound performance will be adequate as 7.1 rear-speakers. I may even try installing an improved cross-over filter for them. Worth a try.
